Warcraft 3 GONE GOLD
by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 13, 2002 7:40am PDTBlizzard has just announced that their 3D strategy game Warcraft 3 has gone gold. The game will be available around the world July 3, at a price of around $55. Thanks badman.
... In the single-player game, players follow the adventures of Legendary Heroes, who grow more formidable with experience. As the game progresses, these Heroes are able to learn spells and special abilities and acquire powerful magic items. Heroes advance even faster in multiplayer games, adding to the intensity of strategic combat between rival powers. Expanded multiplayer options include the ability to share units and resources with allies and to compete anonymously against other players of similar skill levels. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos also includes the most powerful and full-featured World Editor ever released for a Blizzard game. The World Editor puts the same tools used by Blizzard's designers into the hands of players, enabling them to create 3D maps and unique missions, with scripts for units, spells, and action-packed events. Players will also be able to produce their own in-game cinematics, using flexible camera controls and incorporating .mp3-based sound files.

The gameplay itself isn't quite up to starcraft thus far, but the ease of getting decent team games easily makes up for it imo (and the gameplay isn't that bad, just isn't quite as polished as starcraft felt) It isn't quite balanced yet either.. but then again, neither was starcraft on release (zerg owned far too much).

The hero's are (and stil are innovative and cool - and DIFFERENT from War 2 style play)
The camps (mercenaries/ goblin thingo / other goblin thingo) all kick ass also.
Expansions with creeps kick(ed) ass.
The game has had most of the cool stuff removed since beta 1.03 which was excellent, now the game has nothing REALLY stopping you from instantly sending out a peon directly to another mine and mining it instantly (think Starcraft) - wheras before the creeps were ALL OVER the maps which was so cool - it made you think - it slowed people expanding instantly - whoring fast gold / big units and semi-rushing you.
The whole game is now War 2, with hero's and that's about it at best - I so wish they didn't cave in to the fucking whiners who wanted it not to be fun but "competitive" (ie perfectly balanced if possible)
Hell these losers would whine for symmetrical only maps if they could.

I personally PREFER a nice big battle which lasts 30 seconds (like battle chess) rather than just hundreds of units running in and being instantly shredded, ongoing battles with cool animation = fun.
A good example of a game where the developers were fucking MORONIC was Dune Emperor, what were they thinking?
Here's a bit of logic for you.
If game = uses sprites (Dune 2) then game can have many at same time for big battles (if wanted in the game) with little -> no performance issues, hence units can be made weak and plentiful
If game = uses polygons (Dune emperor) then game should be limited in units due to performance issues and have stronger enemies so you get to see some cool animations out of the new 3d engine, plus you don't need so many on the screen @ once (ie a "tank rush" of 5 tanks = amazing, or should be based on the speed of their damned engine)
Guess what the fuck Westwood went with for their polygon based Emperor,... wait for it...
OPTION 1
clever guys!
Hence, War 3 is currently setup quite nicely - max units of 90 I quite like personally.

I've been playing the beta and love it.
I think Blizzard deserves the right to charge the extra $5, to make up for the thousands of you that will go download the first ISO you can find off Kazaa or Direct Connect and then spend another few hours looking up valid cd keys till you can play, and then still come here and b*tch and moan about the price hike.

Theres one thing that annoyed me about Starcraft though, the fact that you can have such a large army, it can be difficult for a casual player to control.
Warcraft 3 has fewer units for you to take care of, these units are more powerful and will last you longer, giving you the chance to effectivly micro-manage your troops and cast spells.
I've been playing this game since beta 1.03, a lot has changed since then, and its turning out to be one hell of a fun game.
Definatley worth 55 bucks. (75 canadian at my local retailer)

I think I heard the lady at EB here in Canada say it was $74. FutureShop isn't known

ATTN: People
If the price for most games is hurting your wallet. As does with mine. sometimes. Wait for the weekend specials that Best Buy or Cicuit City do. They will drop the price for almost half off of the original price.
Much better for your hard-earned dollar ;)

i just can't hang with the rushers. i tended to get obliterated quickly, before i had ever really had a chance to build any units. i don't like that the whole point of mp is essentially to not really exploit the tech tree almost at all, but to build a massive army of grunts that may or may not have upgraded armor or weapons.

Which is weird since I played a lot of warcraft 2 on kali back in the day.
I think it was when I learned it wasn't going to be a straight rts, that's when I started losing interest.
Oh well. I have neverwinter nights to wait for

Serious RTSs are coming in the form of Kohan, Warlords Battlecry I/II, ORB, etc. Games that include pause-and-order and allow you to slow the battle down to encourage tactics, thinking, and planning.
Even Colonel Steve Austin has problems keeping up with RTSs from Blizzard, Westwood, and Ensemble.
