Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jun 09, 2002 6:21pm PDTWell this has probably been the smoothest move-in I think I've ever had. We prepared several days in advance, the woman categorized (and even color coded) boxes and locations, and we decided on a layout of furniture (even taking measurements etc) before showing up. I suggest finding an organization wacko before moving. Hope everyone has had a good weekend, here's some of the stuff:
- Yahoo is actually changing their layout, crazyness! - Looks like the Australians are losing a bit more privacy - A kinder, gentler Microsoft - A lot of people suck at using Kazaa and expose their mailboxes etcLastly, our favorite ass and lime eater Mike Tyson got his ass handed to him on a plate.

Cool things about ASE:
The ASE server organises servers before they even get to your machine. For example, I can tell it to only scan and ping servers in Western Europe. I've wanted this for years in GameSpy because it's seemed ridiculous to have to ping every server *in the world* when all I wanted was a good ping.
You can apply filters at the touch of a button using the excellent tree control and they take effect immediately. It's impressively fast.
The buddy list feature is implemented brilliantly. The ASE server keeps track of all players on all the servers for you and notifies you when your buddies are playing and tells you which server. If I remember correctly, the GameSpy buddy list was unusable because it depended on you finding buddies by refreshing all the servers they could potentially be on. If you & your friends don't play on a small number of servers it meant that it took too long to be worth doing. ASE will also let you see when your friends were playing even if you were not online at the time, so that you can try and catch up with them the next time.
At least in my limited testing, ASE doesn't seem to suffer from the insane amount of swapping to disk which GameSpy does when I exit Half-Life. When I leave a game of CS I find that GameSpy does not respond for about 5 minutes (literally) while the harddrive thrashes like crazy. I brought up Task Manager and it showed GS using increasing amounts of memory which got to 300 meg in the end. Very bad programming.
Don't get me wrong. GameSpy was great. I paid for it a long time ago. But since then they have sat on their fat arses and spent more time building up a web network with annoying shit like File Planet. I mean, go to www.gamespy.com and try and find the download link for GameSpy (not GameSpy Arcade (and don't get me started on that)). It's there but it's not easy to find. That should tell you something.
ASE, on the other hand, is full of great ideas. Check it out if you haven't already!
(I don't have anything to do with ASE or GameSpy except that I use them and have paid for them both.)

1) I'm getting a P4 2.26GHz CPU, but it's OEM and says "Processor only" - so I need to buy a separate fan/heatsink, correct? Assuming this is true, I was looking at the Vantec GSN-7025... it seems decent, and only costs $8. My understanding is that that would be okay for a P4. Also, do I need thermal paste or anything, or does that come with the heatsink/fan?
2) I will get all the cables I need included with my mobo and case, right? No need to order any extra shit?
3) The motherboard I'm getting has onboard LAN (it's an Abit BD7II-R). Should I just use that in place of a NIC, or is there any reason why would want to put in a PCI NIC instead? If I use the onboard thing would it slow down my machine more or something? I was under the impression that onboard stuff can often suck... so I was already planning to get a SB Live rather than use onboard sound, for example.

TOBERMORY, Ont. (CP) - The provincial police have arrested an American man wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after he allegedly posed as a military official. Ontario Provincial Police arrested the man for fraud and theft-related charges early Sunday morning as he waited to board a ferry in Tobermory.
U.S. officials have accused the man of posing as a military special forces captain and taking control of rescue efforts after a bridge collapsed on May 26 in Webbers Falls, Okla. Fourteen people died when a ship struck the bridge over the Arkansas River.
Authorities say the man is suspected of getting free food, lodging and transportation by impersonating a military officer.
The OPP has also charged the man with possession of property obtained by crime, and weapons offences. He is also facing charges under the Canada Immigration Act.
