UT2003 Demo News
by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 07, 2002 8:41am PDTSome Unreal Tournament 2003 demo news on the official game forums. Since the demo release was first rumored to be released during E3 (two weeks ago), but wasn't, people were probably expecting it to be released any day now. Here's the official word from Epic's Mark Rein
We understand you are anxious for the demo but posting "where is the demo" threads here won't make it appear any sooner. When we think we're close to the demo (i.e. within 5-7 days) we'll let everyone know officially through this forum. We're not there yet, we're still more than a week away. We could be more than two weeks or even more than three weeks away. We're not holding out on people, we're just not done with the game yet and although a lot of the game is coming together very quickly we still have no 100% (or even 80%) accurate way to predict exactly when that will be. I promise the development team is working very, very hard to get an awesome, polished UT2003 in your hands. The demo will be released when we think we've got all the major functionality of the game complete so that the feedback from the demo can be focused 100% on things we weren't already aware needed to be addressed. Thanks David Barrack.

I remember the first UT demo. It was high speed, and cool.
I kept pressing "die bitch!", and "you like that?", just to piss off other players.
It was funny, because when they eventually fragged me, and they always did, I was almost guaranteed to hear:
YOU LIKE THAT?
Thanks!

Also, DOOM3 is a singleplayer game...its gonna probably suck for vanilla multiplayer (its gonna be slow and nothing like DOOM1&2 in DM). It is designed to be a great SINGLEPLAYER game. UT2003 is designed to be a FAST PACED MULTIPLAYER GAME. I don't even see any reason to compare the two (it'd be more appropriate to compare it to a DM/CTF/whatever multiplayer game using the DOOM3 engine once something like that is announced...and don't mention Q4; Q4 is gonna be a singleplayer focused game it seems).

"You like that? (oldie but goodie)
"Owned!"
"Suck it down!" (another classic)
"Say hello to my little friend"
"no offense, but you totally suck!"
"I SOOO just made you my bitch"
"Did your keyboard become unplugged for a second or something?"
"Nice"
i guess these suck
They are just making sure this is polished. They know Doom 3 is graphically superior. Who doesn't at this point?
UT2k3 will be a very fun, and I'd bet popular MP game for years to come. Doom 3 will be a kickass single player experience, with DM as an afterthought, and probably have some cool MP mods.
Enjoy both.

You'd be fired. I mean, that's what so called "metrics" are for, that's what projected forcasting is all about....you make schedules based on metrics and project as accurately as possible. It's not all guesswork. Of course, you aren't going to always hit your mark, but over time, you ought to get better at predicting that - and just once, I'd be thrilled to see a game company say, "We think it'll be out on exactly Mon DD, YYYY". wow.
heh...I'm gonna try telling my company or client next time I have to make up a plan..."It'll be done when its done".

Call it a demo test release and all will be well. =)

It's smart for them. They want to get feedback on a demo so they can tune the game so that it's what everyone wants, instead of putting out a test where a large percentage of the bugs/issues reported will be known. They're just trying to keep the S/N ratio down.

They'll release it when it's done, and that suits me fine.
How nice of him to give an approximation of when that will be.
