NWO MP Test Issues
by Steve Gibson, Jun 03, 2002 12:53pm PDTThe New World Order multiplayer test finally came out a few days ago, and the reception it got around here was less than warm with all kinds of people complaining about crashes and bugs etc. So much so that I didnt even bother to install it myself. Well Jim Malmros from Termite has some response to the uh.. response. He says these are the 5 major bugs that are causing 90% of the troubles: (Thanks Blue)
1) Compatibility. You need all the latest drivers (as NWO uses features that are only in the very latest drivers). You also need a 32-meg 3D card and some AGP memory allocated (it normally is all automatically, 16-32 megs). Due to a memory leak you also need at least 256 megs of memory, the more the better. 2) There is a huge bug, with clients leaving a game crashing the server!! This one is pure evil. Basically holds us all back from playing the game properly. I have gone through a lot of coreErr.txt files from users, when they have experienced a crashed server - and they all have a deleted client at the end of the file, at the crash. Our servers at the office can handle deleting clients just fine for some reason. 3) The mini-gun can crash the game when reloading. Also a really nasty one as it is kind of hard to get people to not use the mini. 4) Hosting a server on Win98 is no fun. This is because networking priority boosts are reversed on Win98 compared to Win2K/WinXP. This causes severe lag under Win98. I know a lot of people use Win98 as their gaming OS for the extra fps. 5) Controls setup causes a lot of games to crash.

at first it didn't run very well, then a managed drop the framerate to below 10fps and make the sound stutter horribly.
when i finally came around to switching bit depth to 32 (and returning all graphics detail settings to max), it actually ran at some 30~45 fps in 1024*768. that's on a celeron 1100/GF2(32ddr). lucky i have more than 256MB ram.
to test it i started a server, took the trouble to set maxclients to 4 but not to make it a lan server. lo and behold a little later i had two 2 clients connected. pings in the range of 40~50 (i'm on adsl).
there's some weird 'texture-shifting', minor but noticable. i think it has to do with the LOD being a bit to agressive.
it looks as though the accuracy of 3D coordinates is reduced when you turn/walk. entire walls shift/pop into place just a bit when you stop turning.
it even lowers the texture detail of your immediate surroundings when you'r moving. that would be fine if the textrure popping when you stop moving wouldn't be as noticable as it is.
so yes it has a lot of issues and given these severe bugs it may have been a bit premature even for a test. but i think it has potential and no doubt the next test will be better.

There are cases of flagrant final release crap that many companies have released. These people should be held up to scruitiny. This is not one of those cases

And like the bug "Compatbility Issues" is just one bug. Normally they have like 20 bugs listed all these a part. But well, then you would have had a list of 10000 bugs :)

This sounds like the dev team from the inital World War II Online launch or something. Although at least they're admitted they fucked up with the rest.

and in d3d it ran like ass on the 1ghz, 512ram, gf4 4600 machine i have here. i would expect it to run a little better but i guess not. I am NOT running the most current drivers though, but they are pretty close.. but i need these drivers on here so i cant change them
