4unrealers has a Q&A up with Tim Sweeny. The interview clarifies that there is NO set date for the UT2003 demo, but that it is "close". Other topics include system requirements, frame rate caps, vehicles and engine design. A very good and compact interview, if I may say so.

  • Note he says a steady 60fps...so an average of 60fps may still be quite attainable. Quake1 was slow on most computers of the day and is still remembered as one of the great multiplayer games. UT when it first came out wasn't all that fast (especially if you were running a non-3dfx card). As a modder this worries me a little since there are people who never want to upgrade their older computers...and a game that requires this level of firepower may put some of them off; but Q3 and UT (which had demanding requirements in the beggining) both managed to attain decent sized followings (CS is an anomaly...you're not going to see anything like that again I think).
