GameSpot has a new PlanetSide Q&A, showing that they are still working on this massively multiplayer action game. They ask Verant producer Dave Georgeson about the development, the delay, major changes since last year, character development, if we can upgrade the ingame vehicles, minimum specs for the game, what we can expect from E3 and more. New screenshots are included as well.

GS: Have there been any major changes to the game's overall design from last year? Is the underlying premise of the game--team combat, overrunning enemy bases, and so on--still the same? DG: The underlying premise is still the same--total global war across 10 continents with thousands of players playing all the roles needed to achieve victory for their empire. But many details have changed. Since those details weren't discussed earlier, I'm not certain you'd notice the changes. A lot of work was done creating systems that would keep the players involved for an extended war, as well as economic systems and some reorganization of the global tactics areas.

  • This game, no matter how cool, will never have a massive subscriber base. It's target audience (Online FPS'ers) are accustomed to selecting a server that pings well, and playing there. Unless they plan on having servers in many geographical regions, pings will suck for 90% of the players out there (suck being a relative term.... If you're used to 65 ms while playing CS, 165ms feels like ass). MMORPG's can have centrally located servers because the action is slow so pings don't matter. Neat idea, but unless I can play this with a low ping, I'm not playing it.
