New Jupiter Tech AVI
by Maarten Goldstein, May 15, 2002 5:45am PDTLithtech sends along a new AVI video, showing weather effects from their Jupiter engine. This engine is used in Monolith's upcoming No One Lives Forever 2. The video is a 9.46mb download and runs for 29 seconds.
This new AVI demonstrates some of the stunning weather effects included in the LithTech Jupiter System. The procedural snow effect allows content creators full control over the look and feel of the weather particles as they fall from the sky. The particles move in realistic patterns and can simulate a variety of weather effects with ease. Content creators also have full control over where the effects occur, and the density of the particles. Buildings and overhangs block the snow to complete the effect.If you didn't see the previous video featuring water effects, you can get to that here.

I liked the snow... in particular the very natural perspective effect as you walk or run, of the snow coming right at you. I haven't noticed that in other games. Anyone got a game with snow they can check?
I'm getting tired of FPS, and I'm not interested much in realistic shooters... this would rule for an explorer type SP-RPG, or better yet, MMORPG stuff.

And now let's all take a look at Global Ops, a recently released Lithtech-powered game for a real life benchmark.
Let's see:
* looks like Quake 1 did...or worse (i think Quake 1 had better water)
* has no textures (no, barking dog, a pink wall does NOT indicate it's a brick wall)
* runs like .... ass?

Another good engine is good for gamers :-)
If the particle system is more advanced than Max Payne, I will be very impressed.

The snow cover textures on the ground are nice, but that is just good artwork. Ground looks static. I'll be impressed when everything is dynamically effected by a "weather engine".
But this is monolith, nothing they do ever impresses me ;)
