Blackley's New Groove

Since I can't sleep I thought I would give you this piece of news. As some might remember, the Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley quit Microsoft not too long ago. Word is now spreading on what his new business venture is, a game production company. It will not publish games, it will merely finance them and then sell the finished product to a publisher. Much like what happens in the movie industry. Blackley decided to start this company due to lack of creative games coming out.

Blackley said his decision to pursue a new segment of the game industry was born partly from his experience with the Xbox, which wasn't generating the kind of creative, breakthrough game concepts he had envisioned. "When we developed the Xbox, we thought we were providing this powerful platform for people to create cool games," Blackley said. "Turns out that's not all you need. You need to look at the business side, too, because developing games is a crappy business."
Capital Entertainment Group, as the venture is called, will start with a production fund of $40 to $50 million. It already has a deal two deliver two games to Sega. It will be interesting to see if this kind of company can work in the game industry.

  • Microsoft lacking the ability to generate new and innovative software applications, without buying out other companies wholesale? *cough* Halo Bungie buyout *cough* Pshhaw! :)

Gratuitous bashing aside, I'm glad Blackley is striking out to help incubate more innovating games. It kinda sucks to see a gem like Halo come along once in a blue moon......... the last truly compelling / groundbreaking game that I played before Halo was Quake I. Perhaps Neverwinter Nights will be the next on the list, but only time will tell.

  • It is announced that Mr. Blackley has found a new frontier to explore; the management of multiple game developers. From what I have read its not that new of a thing, except for Blackley's deep connection to the xbox and (I assume good?) relations with Microsoft. I didnt read anything about Microsoft giving Blackley's new company money, so they probably arent counting on him to boost the number of quality games for the xbox, though Blackleys Microsoft ties makes it possible. As Blackley tries to clean up the development business with only a handful of developers, it seems that his project isn't going to abundantly benifit Microsoft. Blackley has stated his passion for making games, so it seems like a natural move for him -- his catastrophe with Trespasser would make it hard to get funding for an independent development house, and keeping his plans in parallel with Microsoft gives him an opportunity to ease closer to the position he wants.
