Someone seemed to have forgotten that they're talking about not selling this stuff to minors, not everyone.

Lots of 16 year old kids have jobs. These kids still do not have the right to legally buy porno, beer, guns, or cigarettes. Exactly how difficult is it for your parent or guardian to know you're playing a controversial game? The only people who won't be playing is the parents who would want their children to be playing if they knew it was being played. Isn't that a Good Thing??(tm)

And finally, Steve I do think these games do have an influence. Even after playing Quake and the like for five years, my first game of GTA3 left me a much angrier and nastier person than usual. I started rambling to my parents about how I hate police officers and the like and all the undue worshipping they were getting after 9/11, blah blah blah. I also remember another statement I made was saying I wanted to kill a cop and my life would be complete. I'm normally a pretty tame and quiet guy. About two hours after saying this stuff, I thought to myself "Why the FUCK did I say that for?"

Sure, talking about killing cops and actually killing someone, but if there's one thing I've learned over the years from evidence, it's that, yes, the adults ARE right when they say kids are generally dumb and don't know better.

Face it, guys. As games get more mature, they're going to be scrutinized and possibly legislized like everything else is. Internet-wide crying about the First Amendment isn't going to help, either.

Keeping the kid in the dark about sex and violence is the parent's job, not the government's. These guys just want the games to stop being made so that they can go back to being lazy parents that don't actually give a crap about their kids.

*Some kids really do get adversly effected by violence in games and movies and tv. They call these kids "unintelligent" and usually come from bad breeding practices of other "unintelligent" people. Just so happens that the kids that can't handle it also have parents that are too stupid to keep them from having access to the stuff.

It's called constituents. Their constituents are made up of "concerned" parents. Concerned means they are concerned they won't have anything to blame their child's behavior on if their child goes whacko. Because no one accepts responsibility anymore for their own actions or for those of their children whom they were supposed to RAISE.

By the way, how is this different from the Shack creating new rules that only the moderators really want? It's really the same thing, just as you can go to another forum or website if you don't like this one, you can emmigrate to some other country if you don't like the State's laws. I think until the parents will admit fault in their kids going on suicide sprees killing their own peers, then we will have no I repeat NO! solution to the current problem today. The government is definately infriging on the rights of gamers and the gaming companies of America and the World. This is total bullshit, I know a shitload of kids that played Doom and got access to guns (Own gun licenses) these days; and they don't go blowing away teachers in school and shit. I personally would be more concerned about the parents who don't seem to be able to distinguish between a game and reality. Kids know that what they are playing isn't real, that's what makes it fun. You get to do all sorts of things you normally wouldn't be able to do. Parents appear not to be able to make that connection and appear to view it as reality. Ban parents... the world would be safer for us all!!!

as i live in australia i really dont care what the US does with there ratings etc, unless of couse the aust govt follows the US.
if a game in the us gets a NC17 or something then they shouldnt sell it to kids, big deal, studies have shown that most gamers are over 18.
but it really comes down to this one line

I wrote a letter to my congressman (rep.) about a similar issue to this a few months ago. Basically I outlined the issue, where I stood, and told him that his decision on Bill X would be a major factor when I considered him a candidate for re-election.

I got a note back a few weeks later that basically said, "While you certainly are allowed to have an opinion, you can stick your vote up your ass."

A right wing district, and we both knew it.

It boggles the mind. Although I personally don't think kids should play some of these games, I understand that it's just my opnion. It's the parent's responsibilty to raise kids correctly, not the governments. We need a group of people to lead our nation, respect the people's personal lives until they step across the line (not continually redraw the line), and ultimatly not micromanage shit. If you ain't outside weilding a chainsaw like a maniac, then they should stay the hell out of your business.

Wait a minute...I thought that games were not able to speak to people on this level. I thought that computer games were lumped into the same catagory as board games. I have never heard of people abusing animals because they played "Rat Trap." So how can computer games cause people to act out violently if board games don't?
