Intel Takes the Lead
by Steve Gibson, May 06, 2002 6:45am PDTWell it's finally happened, the battle between Intel and AMD for the speed crown has been won for the moment. Intel today unveiled the 2.53GHz P4 chip running at an insane 533mhz bus speed on the new i850E chipset, with no word from AMD. Tech-Report sums it up well:
There's no reason to mince words about this one. Intel has clearly and unambiguously taken the performance lead away from AMD now. The faster front-side bus speeds are helpful, as is the clock speed boost to 2.53GHz. Combined, the Pentium 4 has enough extra performance to beat out the Athlon XP 2100+ in all but a few of our tests.Read the reports on HardOCP , Tech-Report , HotHardware , Tweak3D , AnandTech , Tom's Hardware Guide , and SimHQ

this does me absolutely no good.
Even gamers don't need processors this fast. I mean... with modern computers, most of the work is offloaded to the GPU anyway, in games, for example, most X Box games don't come anywhere near filling the CPU pipeline, usually it's running at 30-50% capacity.. and that's only a P3 733. Honestly, for me, and Athlon 1700+ is good enough. I THINK that's where the "price break" is where it gets a LOT more expensive when you go up.

Yay... now I can buy a marginally faster machine for 2x the price. woo..
Or maybe a 2.2 --> 2.93? Not quite as likely...

Forgive my boldness, but from a purely MHz oriented comparison, Intel has had the lead for quite some time. AMD still does not have a CPU operating in excess of 1.8GHz (raw speed), though their XP processors are good performers.

The difference between the 2ghz and the 2.26ghz is like $300 unless I missed some components. But I imagine the price difference is insane right now to get bumped up 3% in performance. Price/performance got jacked.

Now's good time to ask since I see shackstore here:
How much would performance loss if you use PC-133 SDRAM instead of DDR on Athlon 1800 and ECS K7S5A board.. ?
