New Nvidia Chip In August
by Maarten Goldstein, May 01, 2002 3:27pm PDTAccording to Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, we'll be seeing NVidia's latest GPU in August. The new graphics unit will use a different architecture than the current GeForce 4 chip. Not much else was announced at this time. This GPU comes rather fast after the introduction of the GeForce 4 though, seeing how that was announced in February with Ti cards only shipping since March.
The new chip will be manufactured on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s latest 0.13-micron manufacturing process, Huang said. Huang did not reveal the name or specific features of the chip, but did say it was a fundamentally new architecture from the GeForce 4 Titanium introduced earlier this year. "It is the most important contribution we've made to the graphics industry since the founding of this company," Huang said, speaking at the Merrill Lynch Hardware Heaven Technology Conference.

Seriously, I'm gonna see how well my GF2MX does with NWN and Morrowind before I upgrade. I think its always best to procrastinate on these kinds of things. A penny saved is two pennies earned.
the exception is IMAX films. which i think are 60 fps. i forget. but if youve seen one of those you know how fucking good it looks. its not just the size thats impressive, its cause theres none of that ugly blurring.

Though I am usually a skeptical, sardonic prick, I suspect there is some element of truth to that statement. With the aquistion of 3dfx nShitia is likely using some innovative ideas in a brand new product, perhaps I'll hang on to my ailing (original) Radeon 64MB DRR until Sept......

1) Motion blur. If fighter yet zips past you at Mach 1, you shouldn't be able to distinguish anything but a big grey blur.
2) Depth of field. If the 'camera' focuses on a player model close to you, the background is blurred, and vise versa. This was possible in 'Outcast', and IMHO it enriched the gaming experience by quite a bit.
3) Real time full-scene FSAA. We already have this, so scrap it off the list!
4) Realistic shadows. Games like Soldier of Fortune 2 and Jedi Knight 2 have good shadows as it is, but they are far from realistic yet.
5) Realistic reflections. This takes up enormous amounts of processing power I believe. We are slowly moving closer towards this.
With these five working together, games will start feeling much more real. As poly counts go up, near-complete realism can finally be achieved. Atleast I think so?

Q: Did Nvidia's philosophy change with the purchase of 3DFX?
Not too much--we still want to be profitable and we still want to stay in business--so they haven't influenced us in that.

After all the guy said: "It is the most important contribution we've made to the graphics industry since the founding of this company"
It could be something like the Quadro but totally kickass
(That could explain why they are releasing it so soon?)

"The company also plans a follow-on to its nForce chipset, which works with Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon processors but not with Intel's Pentium 4. Huang said the company will continue to focus on chipsets for that market, rather than pursue a license to work with Intel's chips. "
sweet!
