Evening Reading
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 30, 2002 5:21pm PDTAlways fun planning to go to the bank and then realizing it's Queen's Day. Someone turns 93 and it's reason to close things for the day. That sucks pretty much. Also 54 degree weather with rain makes baby Maarten cry. 21 days until sunny LA...
- The end might be near for The Simpsons.Lastly, MIT accidently invented a cellular sex toy. Thanks Lynn.
- Neato new pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope. - New Jersey folks take their part of the Big Game lottery, $58.9 million. They can really use that money.
- It would pretty much suck if it turned out you had 3000 snakes in your home.
- Excuses to go to the World Cup event. - A 17 year old is pretty much screwed thanks to his Internet schemes.

Ok, one of the offices at my work has a completely stuffed Exchange v5.5 install. I have not got a backup of the 'exchsrvr' directory, but I do have a backup of the Information Store and the Directory Store. According to the Microsoft Web Site, numerous newsgroups and the Veritas web site, I need to do the following:
1. Install Exchange using the same Service Pack Level, same name, same site, same organisation (Done that)
2. Disable all 'Automatic' services for the new installation and then stop all services (Done that)
3. Restore the Information and DIrectory Stores from the tape backup, making sure I have unchecked the 'Lossless Restore' switch. (Done that)
4. Delete all the '.log' files from the 'DSDATA' and 'MDBDATA' directories. (Done that)
5. Run a consistency check on the 'DS', 'PRIV' and 'PUB' databases. (Done that)
6. If there are errors repair them using the 'ESEUTIL.EXE' (There were errors, now fixed)
7. Run the 'ISINTEG.EXE' util to fix the PRIV and PUB databases, continue to run the utility until it returns no errors (Done that)
8. Start the Microsoft Exchange Directory Service (This is the failure point)
9. Run the 'ISINTEG.EXE -PATCH' and fix the Information Store (can't do this cause the DS needs to be started)...
Does anyoen out there have any idea?
I am getting an Error 1067, which shows up in the Event Log as "Couldn't recover the restored Microsoft Exchange Server database (EDB). Cannot continue. Error c8000713."
I have looked on TechNet... it tells me that the 'edb.log' file is interfering with the DS service and I need to make sure I remove it and all log files and restore the backup again... um... I did that already and there are no 'edb.log' files on the server ANYWHERE!
I would settle for a simple tool that allowed me to extract the Mailboxes and '.PST' files so i could restore them at a later date as there are only three mailboxes and it would take me long to do. However, I cannot seem to find a tool that can do this. (Is it really so hard???)
Other than that... I'm fast running out of ideas... I have asked a fellow Exchange Admin dude and he reckoned that because I don't have the backup of the original 'exchsrvr' directory I'm buggered.
Any ideas would be welcome!! PLEASE!
Thanks in advance.

The Police have now said that they DO NOT believe computer games (i.e. CS) to be at fault for this massaker (well, d'oh) and they said "The idea for this could have come from any cartoon on TV too".
An independant study also said that whereas a lot of people (i.e. non gamers) think that games make you more aggressive, fact is that with "normal" people these types of games are a vent for aggression and frustration. (well, d'oh).
Looks like all violent games ain't gonna be banned in Germany.
