Jupiter Tech NOLF2 AVI
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 23, 2002 10:04am PDTLithTech today released a new video from their Jupiter tech system. You can grab this video from Fileshack New York City or Fileshack Seattle . The 11.2mb clip (which runs for 33 seconds) "showcases the dynamic lighting and fresnel effects in the sequel to No One Lives Forever". Here's a bit more on the tech
Notice the realistic, reflective water with wave emitters and a particle system at the base of the waterfall combined with the high detail trees in the background. The system behind the sequel to No One Lives Forever, Jupiter features an enriched polygrid that supports dynamic lighting as well as Fresnel reflections. It also supports non-square areas--empowering the creation of more realistic-looking bodies of water. The water system also features wave emitters, cubic environment mapping and a variety of effect triggersFuture videos will show character and object interaction with the water. Update: for those confused about if this is a tech demo or actual No One Lives Forever 2 stuff, here's a note from LithTech "This AVI was taken from the actual Japan level of the sequel to No One Lives Forever. While LithTech is releasing it to showcase the water effects system of Jupiter, it is actual footage taken from within the game".

What version of the Lithtech engine did Global Ops use? Version 0.000001 beta?
The Lithtech engine STILL sucks...

My only concern is the engine requirements, NOLF required way too much power to run properly, especially when compared to the competition. I'm really worried that Lithtech is too concerned with trying to be a solution to every genre, and thus their engine seems to quickly acquiring the status of 'bloatware'.
I'd be very comforting if Lithtech/Monolith would start including a few blurbs about engine optimization in their PR releases.

That's from the build at GDC, and it's "gameplay" footage (not properly populated levels yet, but not flyby video either) running on fairly normal PCs.
Bear in mind that the build at GDC was pre-alpha, and would go through at least one more optimization phase before release. (not to mention that many of us will have better hardware by November)

What does the "rate this post" do? A stupid q - I know, but I don't stop by here(at the forums) that often - Almost always new features at the Shack whenever I visit, or maybe I'm not paying attention. thanks tho

I mean, I know you guys love NOLF, and rightly so (because it's the best FPS since Half-Life), but it used to be that if any post had the word "LithTech" in it here you guys would tear the poor LT guys a new one!
BTW - the water isn't the most impressive new LT stuff. Their lip-synching is pretty awesome, and the animation system looks great, too. I spoke with them at GDC and they've now got renderstyles (which means bump mapping et al) on all the world geometry now. The art just isn't ready yet, so they haven't shown it off. That should kick up the rendering quality a notch.

Not bad though. If it comes out around the same time as Doom III I feel that id will win overall with their lighting...of course I have no idea what the Jupiter engine's lighting capabilities are so basically I'm just talking out of my id fanboy ass here :)
