Xbox Creator Quits
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 22, 2002 10:49am PDTNormally console news is saved up until Jason's Late Night Consoling post, but this is pretty big news (and several people have already been emailing us). Seamus Blackley, co-creator of the Xbox and considered the project's father by many, has quit Microsoft. According to Blackley's spokeswoman and Microsoft, he has left for a new venture. What this venture is will not be announced for another two weeks. News of Blackley leaving comes just a few days after Microsoft announced it had cut the sales target for the Xbox by some 40 percent, due to dissapointing sales outside the U.S. In other news, Nintendo has announced a price cut for the GameCube in Europe. Though it hasn't even launched yet, the Cube will now be 199 Euros (about $177) when it launches May 3. Previously the GameCube was going to cost 249 Euros.

The xbox is a solid system and just because it didnt do well in other parts of the world that feel their own product it superior doesn't mean garbage. I just bought Spiderman for it, I'm having a great time with it.

That's probably what's going to happen. Hopefully he can continue on his previous success and make Trespasser 2.

This is not the end for the Xbox. It's not.
Before you write me off as an Xbox fanboy, know that I don't own one.
If you look at how the Xbox is put together, all of the components that comprise the system, you'll see that there's all kinds of expandibility, even to the point of the Xbox being a stand-in for a home computer. Granted, it would be a bastardized PC, but looking at the compnents it's obvious that the Xbox is a lot more PC than it is console. Microsoft put that machine together with a specific purpose. They also put in place a roadmap to ensure that their machine would be successful for a long, long time.
Considering that the Xbox network will be going online soon, and that of the three major competitors out there, the Xbox has the greatest potential for expandibility (as it has much more processing power than it's competition, and more power=longevity) plus, if you couple that with the billions of dollars that Microsoft has already committed to the success of its console, it's difficult to rationalize how one man's departure is going to mark the end for that system.
Just my two cents.

But then again the Japanese may learn that Microsoft always does their first release badly but then comes back to kick ass.......

Everyone agreed with me.
I really, really don't care about the Gamecube. Even the dirt-cheap price is no incentive. There are no must-have titles for it, with the possible exception of SSBM, but I haven't tried that one yet.
Yep, it'll be an Xbox this summer for me.

Now that's dedication to the product!
I guess he figured it was more lucrative to go it alone..
Yeah right... money talks and with the amount of money MS has and with what they're planning to do, it's safe to say that their 2nd rendition of a console will have to fail before they fall by the wayside in the console market.
