No More Duron
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 18, 2002 10:50am PDTThe Inquirer is reporting that AMD is phasing out the budget Duron CPUs. They will be replaced by lower speed grade Athlon XP chips, which are already cheap anyway. The Durons should be gone by the end of the year.

This is gonna be a long post,.. but.
Back about 12->18 months ago, the top of the line CPU for around 450$ -> 500$ .AU was the 1.4 T-Bird.
The 1.0ghz Athlon (or 900mhz?) was the lowest of the ATHLON range of CPU's.
Now,... this low range 1.0 ghz Athlon which overclocked to the top speeds when unlocked cost 170$ .AU or 85$ US.
Now, the costs are "fastest avail" around at this present time is about the same 450$ and higher, but their "low range" prices they have kept high - by phasing out CPU's too early, clever "price reductions" etc they have caused the MINIMUM cost of an AMD Athlon to be around 250$ Australian.
This means for a machine builder like me, I simply CAN NOT ]b build an AMD Athlon based machine without a minimum cost of 250 (maybe 230$ if I really bargain my way around) for the CPU.
That sucks.
I'd be more than happy for them to keep a couple more of their chips out (example when they release the 2.2 DON'T fucking phase out the 1600, 1700 and 1800 so quickly assholes and just drop the fucking price :(

Just a thought.
Love AMD though, great prices. In my local store, up here in Canada, the 2100+ xp ($444) is about half the price of a 2.2ghz intel ($840).

I love AMD CPU's, they make the Intel CPU's I buy cheaper
