Radeon vs GeForce
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 16, 2002 7:33am PDTThere's a sub $200 videocard roundup on AnandTech, for all those people looking to upgrade on a budget. It's actually more of a direct comparison as the Radeon 8500LE and GeForce4 Ti 4200 are the only two products benchmarked.

Also these sights are overlooking the radeon 8500 64MB oem which can be had for as little as 120-130 which is significantly cheaper than the 4200. And also didn't carmack say that the radeon 8500 could process doom in 1 pass where it would take that geforce3&4 2-3 passes for each scene. Making it significantly better than the gf4 for future games
Having said all that i'll probably be getting a gf3ti200 / 4ti4200 when there avialable (from gf1ddr) since it seems like radeons don't support tv cards other than ati (ie bt848)

let me toss this in your faces...
a week ago i had to use my radeon tweaker to turn off and on certain opengl tags in the registry to get good performance in JK2
for some reason the team arena engine just dont like my computer/vid card combo
anyways
a couple days ago i got the latest ati drivers (when you install them it obviously goes back to the ati reg. defaults)
i didnt have to tweak sweet fuck all besides re overclocking to 204/204mhz
yea, ati drivers are pretty damn good now and they havent crashed for me or given me shit for months now... so all you ati driver bashers can suck a nut

Also, the 4200 is coming in at $199...the 8500 128MB version can be found for $130. You can put the $70 difference into the purchase of a new vid card in 18 months. I am not saying that ATI is the greatest thing going, but the 8500 is a pretty killer card.

Damn... I usually don't spend more than $100 on a video card... heh...
If you like them, for that matter, email other hardware sites and ask for the comparisons as well. It's a good comparison that isn't easy to do, and is even harder to do accurately.
