ShackXchange?
by jason bergman, Apr 06, 2002 10:07am PSTAs some of you may recall, last week I made a few posts to an ER story where I mentioned that I had a ton of old games to sell, and had decided that eBay wasn't a great place for old PC games. After doing some thinking on the subject (and checking out a few places that were suggested to me by Shack readers), I have come to the conclusion that there really isn't a great place to sell this stuff, at least not one where the right people will see it. Around here when we decide there's something that's not being done right, we take it on ourselves to make it so...that's the reason we started ShackReviews and it's the reason FileShack is well-underway. So my question today, is this: how many of you would be interested in a ShackXchange site where you could buy, sell and trade old games and hardware with your fellow Shack readers? And if you are interested, what features would you want to see? Obviously in such a site user feedback is a must, but what else would you want? Note that this is not an auction site, just a buy/sell/trade thing. I'm just throwing around ideas here, but if there's enough of a demand, I may move forward on it. As such, comments here and responses to the poll above are greatly appreciated.

Comments
-Only registered users can post/buy games
-Like on ebay a rating of the user gets displayed so people know who they're dealing with
-Using only registered e-mail addresses if possible
-Forcing all transactions through an escrow (Steve, polish those negotiation skills)

the only 100% secure way i can think of handling things would be to play middle man, validating the cash and products on every exchange. that's a lot of work.
any other ideas?

My guess is that you have a ton of sellers, but only a hand full of buyers.
i have tons of games that i'd like to sell.
this would kick soo much ass.
go for it.

ShackXChange is nice, but don't make it TOO big and commercial

Basically a person would log on to the shacktrade.com or whatever, and there would be a list of games for sale and the lowest price. For instance, the games would be broken down by platform, and under each platform page would be a listing. I click on PS2 and see GTA3, MGS2, etc..along with the lowest used price, but it would say "10 used for as low as $XXX dollars." The person clicks on "i want to buy/trade," and is given the seller's email address. Then the two get to work it out however they want, and afterwards the shack sends both parties an email allowing them to rank the other person.
So these rankings show up next to the person's name when other people are buying, so you can know right off if the person has a good history or not.
just my two cents

"WILLING TO TRADE: LASER PENS! OAKLEY SUNGLASSES! ROLEX WATCHES! ANTIQUE CLOCKS! GEORGE BUSH DOLLAR BILLS! PHEROMONES! SECRET SPYING CDROM!! DIET PILLS: LOSE 700 LBS IN 20 MINS! 27K GOLD NECKLASES!! 78 POUNDS OF PENNIES!! HARDCORE ANAL DUNGEON PORN!!! L@@K L@@K L@@K!!!!!!!!!!"
Then i think this would be awesome...But i'd watch out for WAREZ if I were you Steve.

I log into shackstore and enter in the fact that I have a NES Zelda 1 gold cartridge to sell. Shackstore reviews my information, then posts it (maybe with a tie-in to shackreviews?). A buyer comes along and buys it from shackstore. The seller then ships said merchandise to the buyer. When the buyer said "ok, great!" then shackstore gives the money to the seller. If the buyer said "never received it!" and the seller doesn't argue that fact, seller is refunded.
And, of course, shack could get it's cut with a graduated scale like ebay.

This would of course all be optional. I think its important to get to choose who we deal with for this to be a success. I have nothing against younger people in general, so don't go flame crazy talking about how mature you are. I've just had bad experiences in the past which could have been avoided had this criteria been available.

The shack is an unstoppable empire of stuff that doesn't suck!
Actually you guys seem to have been working your asses off lately, how many people are there working for shack? Isn't it like 4 or so?

This is a BAD IDEA(tm). Please please please please please please PLEASE let's see how Shackstore and Fileshack turn out and wait a while before anything else is done. Shacknews is probably the last great bastion of good content there is left on the web, without popups, lame flash ads (they were killed when they showed up), and general all around commercialism spoiling the site. Don't get me wrong, I am all for Steve and Maarten being financially independent by living off of proceeds from ads (haha, ya right) and Shackstore, and whatever else they manage to think up. Why am I bringing Steve and Maarten's money into this? They are the only 2 people who work on the site, and if they hire anyone else, they lose money. The last thing I want to see is some watered down version of the website I now visit 5+ times a day, and religiously post on every day. If anyone else gets hired, we risk diluting the good content we see here. Just look at VoodooExtreme, they have multiple guys posting news, who somehow manage to post DUPLICATE NEWS POSTS. They're not working in tandem, and if the Shack ever becomes like that, that'll be the day I stop reading and stick to something that is just a page of links, like Bluesnews.

Only way I could see it working is if you act as a liason between the two parties. They mail you the item, Jason verifies it (*for a fee*) and then the transaction is completed. Still a pain in the butt, but hey, then you make moolah and there's no scammin.
