Unreal Tournament & Linux

It looks like the Linux port of the Unreal Tournament servers is well underway, in fact according to the latest Unreal Tech Page update by GreenMarine he just finished playing a few rounds on one of the servers. Here is a bit of it, thanks Stallion.

This means that a solid UT linux server will most likely be available when UT ships (if not sooner). I'll probably see what needs to be done to get everything moved over to the Unreal source safe and cook up an Unreal linux server for our beta testers tonight.

  • Unfortunately most games servers don\'t report the OS type. Quake2 and Q3Test servers do, so I use them as examples.

    id Q2 Master, responding servers:

    LINUX: 1055 56%
    Win32: 804 43%
    *BSD: 2 ~0%
    No version shown: 8 ~0%
    ==================================
    Total: 1869 100%

    id Q3Test Master, responding servers:

    LINUX: 169 30%
    Win32: 319 57%
    Mac: 67 12%
    v1.02 LINUX: 2 ~0% (v 1.02, wtf is this guy thinking?)
    ==================================
    Total: 557

    As you can see, LINUX is used for a lot of servers. For Q3Test, it is in the minority. This can be attributed to many things. One that I would guess is that large reliable servers are sticking with Q2 because that is what the players are playing most.

    This also doesn\'t look at quality of game. I suspect if you checked on ping + timeout, you\'d find a lot of LINUX servers high on your list. A lot of the Win32 servers are the servers-run-while-playing-on-the-same-computer (listen) type of servers that some l33t-ass user is running off his cable modem.

    Unfortunately it is not easy to acquire stats. for Half-Life or Quakeworld servers. One could write a script to queso them all, but I\'m not up to doing that. I _like_ keeping my internet connection.

  • go download Linux, if you spend enough time
    here to make comments then you spend enough
    time on computers playing games and fixing M$
    problems to learn Linux.

    If you haven\'t used Linux for over a few weeks/months
    then you have no right to say its a server or a client
    or anything else. get a clue, then voice your opinion.

    Its a server, its a clients, its a hub, its a router, its a firewall,
    its a jukebox, its a mp3 encoder, its a image manipulation
    workstation, webpage design, programing, word processing
    station all at the same time on a P166 with 64M and no
    slow down, and it does it all for _hours_ with out
    crashing, no really, I\'ve done that :)

    about being vocal: in LinuxLand we\'re vocal cause we
    love our OS, people are just as vocal in M$Land but they
    are alway talkin about stuff NOT working. We are right

    just cause some people can\'t write a sentence without
    using one of George Carlin\'s seven doesn\'t mean they\'re
    emotional and know what they\'re talking about *eh-hem #1*
