EverQuest is Addictive

We've had a few people send this story in (David Shockley being first). Apparently a young guy killed himself in connection to his addiction to playing EverQuest. A while back there was a fake story about this but this one appears to be legit. The mother of the kid had some criticism for the game:

"The manufacturer of EverQuest purposely made it in such a way that it is more intriguing to the addict," Parker said. "It could be created in a less addictive way, but (that) would be the difference between powdered cocaine and crack cocaine."
So, the mom wants Verant to carry warning labels saying "this game is addictive" and has an attorney ready to take Verant to court to make sure it happens. Also, they say there is a possibility of a class action lawsuit. It should also be mentioned the kid was diagnosed with depression and the mother had tried to get him to live in a "group home" in the past.

  • I think the reason this guy killed himself is because he was betrayed, and the fact that it was through a game is really irrevelent. Retreating into a computer generated world where the great ugliness of humanity is somewhat diluted, but humans remain humans, and maliciousness for the sake of a few fleeting chuckles is inevitable. I can see how an unpopular/low self esteeme/loner type person would seek to escape such people with a game, and how a random stab in the midst of that haven could convince them to make the escape from life complete.Sad,silly.Expect more of this....

  • I don't fault the mother. No one should. The guy was 21 years old, he is responsible for his own demise. If I was depressed and someone took my computer away because I was playing too much, I wouldn't be happy about that. I do feel that suing Verant is an extreme step, and would be willing to sign a waiver that enacts a 'wrongful suit' law. I guess Texas has something similar to it (not sure though).

Sure, everyone has the right to file a lawsuit, but I do feel that there should be some sort of penalty for wrongful lawsuit- this could possibly deter the constant flood of lawsuits.
