Here's an example: Intel comes out with a generic P4 3Gig. AMD comes out with the 3000+ in retaliation. Then, a month later, Intel improves the P4 3Gig core. And goes all the way to the 2.5's with the core update. Lets say that this new hypothetical core outperforms the previous P4' by a noticable margin. Now the 3000+ Athlon no longer performs comparably to it, and in fact to look more like a 2.5Gig. What does AMD do, go backwards and change the name or hope that nobody notices?
By marketing in this manner AMD is working itself into a potentially dangerous position.

I mean, AMD is doing them a favor; by naming their processors with numbers that are higher than the actual MHz, it doesn't make Intel look so bad when the performance is the same.

"gee, this 2100 AMD performs just as well as this 2400 Intel."
or
"gee, this 1.7ghz AMD performs just as well as this 2.4ghz Intel."
If I were intel, I'd want people to think the AMD chips were running at or near the same clock speeds if AMD chips are gonna perform as well as my chips ;)

P4 2.4GHz compared with the Athlon XP 2100+. As you can see, pretty much the only benchmarks putting Intel ahead are either memory bus intensive, clockspeed sensitive, or reliant on proprietary extensions which are still not commonplace in programs. Also keep in mind that the Athlon is much cheaper.
This retail employee brainwashing campaign will only affect those who aren't in the know, and there are still quite a few of them.
I hope.

This could get ugly.
OMG, AMD R00LZ.
The level of fanboyism with no grasp of logic is staggering. 'You' people would have there be no competition. Which without there would be no CHEAP AMD procs for your grubby little fingers. To satisfy that need to ally yourself with a logo and a slogan, will only bring about your demise in the end.
Do they know realize they are the ones who initially jerked around the mhz ratings and that is why AMD had to make model #'s.
If a AMD 1.6 is marked as an 1.9 it's only b/c an Intel 1.9 is as fast as an AMD 1.6...who besides nerds like us would buy a AMD1.6 over a Intel 1.9 if you didn't know they were the same speed?
Keep Fighting, I want to build a new 'puter. :)
