Soldier of Fortune 2 Interview
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 02, 2002 6:00am PSTAs promised, we have a Soldier of Fortune 2 interview for you all. Raven's Kenn Hoekstra was kind enough as always to answer some questions about the game. We talk about the premise, AI assistance, the realism, the locations John Mullins visits, demo plans and more.
Shack: Some of the screenshots from the game show akimbo guns. Which weapons can we use in pairs? Kenn: The two pistols and the micro-uzi can be used in pairs and can be mixed and matched so you can have two US SOCOMs for example, or a SOCOM and an Uzi, etc. The real John Mullins was rather appalled at the thought of guns Akimbo, but the fans wanted it so we gave them what they wanted. Sacrifices had to be made for the sake of the “game.” ...read

OMFG. That is a step in the right direction. I still want to be able to spit and perhaps even go pee pee on the corpse.
I know this isn't practical but what would also be great is if there were incentives for efficiently killing your enemy. For example, you don't want to start shooting up the legs or arms too much because if you try and drag the body out of the way, the arm or leg might come off, leaving an even bigger mess.
Hi, I am really fucked in the head I think.

Oh god. Whats up with this typical shack crying that games are too short now even JK2? Complete utter BS. Jk2 is not short. If you think Deus Ex was a short game (which it wasnt of course) then you need to find a new hobby or u need to play FF games on the ps2.
I doubt that the interviewer actually finished JK2. Do you own research before saying thats that arent true.

CD Keys, especially like the one Quake3 has used are not only pretty effective, but I've never heard of any/many problems with them. Although part of this might be due to id software having pretty reliable servers that are up 24-7-365 to verify the CDKeys when people go online to play.

I could understand if you sit there and beat the game in one sitting I would be pissed, but for the PC you got auto-save, save anywhere so that takes all the challenge out I would think.
I mean Castlevania is beloved by all for the GBA but it takes less then 5 hrs to beat if you go about it normally. Super Metroid was about 5-7 hrs, etc...

Akimbo guns being the perfect time when fun should be greater than realism. Last time I had any akimbo fun in an FPS was ActionHalfLife.
I'd just like to vouch for the game not seeming short so far (haven't beaten it yet)... it's at least on par with RTCW and that was long enough for me (if not as hard as JK2, which isn't a bad thing mind you), and the multiplayer is fun as hell, so I got my money's worth.
Thanks Raven!
"What is the premise of Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix?"
i would hang myself...if you are the first person to interview someone about a game, ok, ask that question but when 10,000 interviews have come out that all ask that and there is a website telling all about the game, is it really necessary to ask that?...if your question isn't going to lead to new information, don't bother asking it...

Shack: The time it takes to complete Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force is often talked about. The recently released Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast isn't very lengthy either. Will Soldier of Fortune 2 be another 10 hour game?
Geez... harsh man. And JK2 is a pretty lengthy game so I don't know how you could say that it's short. It's at least 20 hours if you're actually trying to enjoy it and not just rush all the way through. You could've said "How long will the single player campaign be, in number of hours?" or something along those lines and would've gotten the same answer without bothering them. And you know, bothered developers don't answer interview requests :).
Anyway, thanks for the interview... a few new things there.

OMFG that makes me giggle with anticipation :D
I cant wait for this mutha
nice interview Maarten!
Kenn: I havenÂ’t heard any complaints about the length of Jedi Outcast and itÂ’s certainly longer than ten hours. But I digress... Soldier 2 is a 2 CD game that spans 60 single player levels. There will be many, many hours of gameplay to be had by all. Once you throw in randomly generated single player missions and complete multiplayer, youÂ’ve got yourself one hefty FPS game
I agree on both counts, there wasn't much length to JKII (provided you didn't get stuck on a puzzle or saber battle), nor was there much length to Elite Forces. The reply tendered by Kenn, for me, smacks of primarily marketing, rather than informing, I guess that taints the rest of his replies. The responses from Doug Church and Warren Specter in this http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/19616 article, contrast quite strongly. It suppose would be a difficult rope to walk, that of marketing whilst still giving straight answers, he probably does want to sell his game, but I think there's more harm than good in denying a shortfall.
Anyway, I'll just just hope it's well produced, and satisfyingly long. If it's not, then C'est La Vie.
Of course the timing of the release is perfect; by that time, I'll be stuck at home with no Internet connection and only my single-player games being the reason to turn my computer on. Christmas really is the wrong time for me since I head right back to class in a matter of weeks; during the summer, I have plenty of time for gaming.
