Xbox Outside The US
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 28, 2002 5:40am PSTBloomberg.com has a story about the Xbox sales in Japan and Europe (thanks EuroGamer). Basically, they are bad. The president of Electronic Arts even says "Microsoft has had its teeth kicked in". Perhaps if MS wouldn't screw Europe (and Australia too I hear) on the price of the console it would sell better (around $410 instead of $299). Of course, Microsoft says everything is just peachy
``We're off to a great start in every region,'' O'Rourke said in an interview. ``We went into this with eyes wide open, knowing we would have a successful launch, but it would be measured in different metrics.''

You guys really should have better things to do than discussing each others countries etc over a piece of fucking plastic....
...or even worse: the sales figures of a fucking piece of plastic.

Lets have a look at the games which are selling consoles today...
GTA3-Europe
GT3 - Japan
Wipeout - Europe
Smash Bros Mele - Japan
Pikimin - Japan
Luigi's Mansion -Japan
Halo- NA.
DOA3 - Japan
Now.. correct me if im wrong, but to me it appears quite a lot of important games are being made outside america... Are you sure you want to turn your back on these markets and developers?

Isn't like Europe where people are getting reamed at 400USD a console.

Err, please next time try to argument something, you know stating that you don't care because you hate Europe is besides racist very stupid, because let me remind you in this day AND age that around 80% of all Media distribution in the US (And obviously the world) is in the hands of European and Japanese companies (Yes my dears that include games as well).
Throwing fistyfights and saying but I've worked on all consoles but I won't say what I did so not to catch any flak is cowardice, I don't see id, Epic, 3DRealms, etc. employees that post here denying what they've done or accomplished (Good or bad)
Third, yes we all know that you love the XBox, good on you folks... this is an article discussing it doing badly in Europe/Japan so stop being suspect trolls and start throwing logical arguments (You know, "I HATE EUROPE WAAH WAAH WAAH USA! USA! USA!" is not an argument)

Sigh, yep I'm waiting for the positive spin and not to admit that the pricing was wrong and that they tried to ASSRAPE european and australian consumers

- Customer sees Halo in action
- Customer exclaims 'Whoa.'
- Customer sees Xbox price
- Customer leaves the store with a PS2
Basically, since the console is priced at $499 (At an average, seen higher and lower), the games are $69, controllers $39 and DVD kits $49 - few people can afford it. I had planned to buy one but I really don't feel like wasting $700+ on a game console.
I was going to import an NTSC one, but then there's the problems that you can't buy PAL games for it. That means I'll have to import every single game myself, and I dunno how I'd manage to sell anything once that time comes.
Third problem is the DVD playback. Had the DVD kit played both Region 1 and 2 DVD's, I couldve probably told my dad that we'd split up the cost, as we have yet to buy a DVD player for the livingroom. Now that option isn't feasible either.
Conclusion? The suck :/

1. Err... none as yet.
Reasons not to buy an X-Box in europe
1. Too high a cost, to be competitive with other consoles (wake up MS) we dont have that kinda cash to buy the console, then buy the accessories as well!
2. PS2 has a massive games catalouge and affordable. (not doubt another price reduction b4 this fall, due to games cube only costing £150 at launch)
3. Alot of ppl are unsure about the future of new consoles, stabiliy is gained from large user base, large user base is gained from kick ass games that ppl have to buy because they kick ass.
Does anyone really, deeply and honestly feel that the X-Box will be a success with so much good competion from rivals?

Thats around the PS2 price..
Plus it gets something like this:
Super Monkey Ball developer Amusement Vision will be producing a Triforce arcade version of F-Zero in time for the end of 2002, with a Nintendo-made GameCube version to follow.

microsoft are doing pretty good with advertising, i get the idea theyre shifting quite a few, but the price tag is a bit much. those who know about it (and dont consider it a kids console) are waiting out for the gamecube (£380 vs £180 - realistic prices) although theres not much in the way of giant boards and displays like microsoft did. still, xbox and one game, vs gamecube and 5 games...
Stop and think about it for a second.
I'm not saying it doesn't have other good games; in fact, i'm sure there are games that are arguably better in different genres. But IMHO Halo is the title by which the XBOX gained market penetration with us gamers.

oh shit, too late...
Especially in Europe, since some of the X Boxes are being made there. I don't see microsoft shooting thsemselves in the foot with high prices forever, marketing is generally their strong point.
The only thing I can think is that perhaps microsoft just doesn't care about Europe and Japan, for some reason. That seems really unlikely though, especially Japan.
