Jedi Knight 2 In Stores

According to the latest LucasArts Insider email, Raven's Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast will be showing up in stores today. That's a day earlier than previously announced. Now it's fair to say this game is highly anticipated, partly due to Raven's track record of good games and of course the fact that the original game was excellent. If you pick it up today, let our readers know where you bought it. Already got some early impressions? Post them!

I've also added the game to our game review database. If you already want some tips on the game, you can visit the LucasForums where one of the Raven programmers has posted several mini-strategy guides. Thanks JediKnightII.net for that one.

  • I played JK2 for about 4 hours today. Single player so far is good but not great which is typical for Raven.

Multiplayer looks like it might be really cool, hard to say after only a couple hours but the force abilities are definitely original, some guy was holding me in the air with a force ability and walking towards a ledge so the only thing I could do was use a force pull at the last moment and take him with me :) anyways it's pretty cool. Wish it was a little faster, I keep feeling like the run is off but it's not but there is a speed ability.

I haven't noticed any bugs, game runs very smoothly.

And for the record I didn't like half life much, never even made it through the game I found it so boring. Some people just don't like the "movie" type single player experience and I'm obviously one of them.

  • OK its out in L.A., EB store at Pico.

Heres a mini review of what i like and i dont so far:

    So far i love:

    -the story so far
-fantastic voice-overs. Lukes voice is perfect even tho it wasnt Mark h. himself.
-lightsaber combat rules, nuff said. The saberlock is too cool and very cinematic
-the models are amazing. Animations are superb!
-good choice of music so far
-Yavin was really cool. I got chills watching the Jedis saber trainning. Very, very cool.
-the ingame cimematics are well done.
    -its star wars

now here what i dont like. Keep in mind that im not bashing anyhing but any game is hardly perfect and i want to voice my opinion, being a huge fan,ok?

    - The level design:

I mean. urg. Is this Raven?? What happend here? Yavin was cool. Some of the first mission outdoors scene were cool but for most of the time i feel like being in a 'box' room with crates. Theres zero detail. Why is that? I mean sure keep the poly count low but this is 2002. And yes im a total graphics whore. So bite me.
It just feels all blocky to me. YOu cant comare the games but RTCW had way more detail in some of the levels. Also some of the textures are so off. Just feel cheap. Raven can do better. Heretic 2's level design was fantastic. And that was q2 engine.

Example, the game FAKK2 is 2 years old. Pick it up from the bargin bin and check out the detail in the levels and textures.

    - Atmosphere:

The game does feel like SW of course but there is a serious lack of lighting/mood in the game. I know that was never the strength of the q3 tech but looking at some of the UT2003 level shots, i really want more moody scenes.

    - single player gameplay

Ok so i know i shouldve not expect too much. But besides bots (jen, lando, luke) helping you out now, where's the innovation here? Besides the saber combat theres nothing new. Still good tho.

-MP levels: urg. Again. I dont like any of the MP maps besides the bespin map. See my crying about the level design above.

Overall i say Raven did a good job but i can see the quick development cycle, theres no doubt about it.

Maybe a JKO2 with the Doom3 tech and 2 years in dev will bring something better.

  • well I love the game... despite what everyone says... I tend to think that the criticisms are fair, that its mostly find key, run run run, kill baddies, find key. However, I think the game is a hell of alot of fun when you start using the force powers. I think that is quite innovative and it gets better as you go through the game. The lightsaber is definitely better designed this game and you tend to find yourself ending up using it later on in the game, and approaches a sort of synergy with the powers. All in all I'd say thats a major accomplishment right there in the gameplsy dept. The levels are beautiful and they obviously went all out on the look of the game. The AI is so-so... some times you get good, sometimes you get bad. I can't say I've seen anything that was marginally better or worse in most other games that have come out. I don't know how klerck could possibly finish it in 12 hours, it is taking me forever. Some of the puzzles are a little frustrating, but there aren't many like that.

All in all the gameplay is linear, not hugely innovate, the saber by far becomes the best weapon and its obvious alot of design went into that entire combat system along with the force powers. I'd definitely say its worth the $50-$60 for anyone to have an enjoyable time

  • The game feels pretty solid / stable. It uses the Quake3 engine which surprised me at first, since LucasArts tends to develop their own engines for games. Then I realized Raven did the development, and it made sense. Raven has always used id software engines.

The previews I read were fairly correct. The first 20 minutes is very monotonous, boring, ect. You spend most of your time searching for a secret passageway or a certain lever to pull to move through the level. I hope it gets better because it feels like all of the rest of the FPS games IÂ’ve ever played. You hop around crates collecting items and shooting stormtroopers. You donÂ’t start out with a saber or force abilities either which is strange, since I remember the character being a full Jedi by the end of the last game. IÂ’m stuck in some ally right now with no clue where to get out. I plan on sticking with it though.

The graphics look good. You feel like youÂ’re in a Star Wars movie (a kind of cheesy one). Although I will say the stormtrooper animation and AI look crappy. They either rush straight at you or hide and donÂ’t come out to fight. This is semi-frustrating, only because I would hope enemy AI would have improved since Q3A and other such titles. It really hasnÂ’t.

Sound is great if you like John Williams. I do.

I played multiplayer with a set of bots, and got to check out the light saber. The moves feel really loopy, and difficult to manage. I understand a lot of that has to do with my inexperience, and hopefully it will improve. You can choose 3 different settings on the saber. Of which, IÂ’m guessing, allow fast-low damage, medium, and slow-high damage attacks. There are a bunch of multi maps and game modes. One mode is Jedi Duel where itÂ’s saber only 1 on 1. The winner stays to fight while the loser goes to the end of the queue. Kinda cool.
