About now a movie star is whining to Barbara Walters, which means the Academy Awards is just an hour away. This year's awards are going to be pretty close in several of the major categories, so I fully expect to be on the edge of my seat throughout the process. Here's a full list of the nominees, and here's my article with my picks and the reasoning behind them. Good luck to everyone who's betting on the show and let's all hope the musical numbers are short and sweet, and there are some great new trailers for upcoming movies during the commercials. Enjoy the show!

  • Anybody else think the nominees are weak this year. I know that is sad most years, but outside maybe one or two in the best picture category there clearly is no "great film."

Beautiful Mind was very good but is WAY overhyped. LOTR was great (only one I can say is great). Gosford Park was very good ,but up for Best Picture? I can see the nod for Altman and maybe a screenplay, but I've seen it twice now and it really is not a great film. Can't speak for In the Bedroom.

Last but not least. MOULIN ROUGE! Visually dazzling. Stunning special effects. Marvelous Costumes. Toilet Paper plot. This if anything proves my contention that this is a weak year. This is nothing but sympathy because Nicole Kidman got dumped. She's a wonderful actress, but this films Oscar hopes seriously ride on symptahy for her.
