  • Ok, if you are thinking about your NWN character(s) already, and are wondering how they generate the players Attributes, here is a quick tutorial on the "point buy" method.

    Point buy tutorial.

    bioware are still deciding how many points to give, but they are likely to give at least 25 points to use. The current talk is probably starting with 30 point buy

    Before you spend any points, you have an 8 in every stat.

    So you would have

    str:8
    dex:8
    con:8
    int:8
    wis:8
    cha:8

    and 25 points to spend.

    now, you can raise the 8 score to any of the scores below for the listed number of points.

    9 = 1 point
    10 = 2 points
    11 = 3 points
    12 = 4 points
    13 = 5 points
    14 = 6 points
    15 = 8 points
    16 = 10 points
    17 = 14 points
    18 = 18 points

    to raise your ability score from 8 to 9, costs 1 point. to raise the ability from 8 to 14 costs 6 points...

    attribute scores give penalties / bonuses to anything associated with that score (skills, comabt actions, whatever).

    6 = -2 penalty
    7 = -2 penalty
    8 = -1 penalty
    9 = -1 penalty
    10 = nothing
    11 = nothing
    12 = +1 bonus
    13 = +1 bonus
    14 = +2 bonus
    15 = +2 bonus
    16 = +3 bonus
    17 = +3 bonus
    18 = +4 bonus
    19 = +4 bonus
    20 = +5 bonus

    and so on...

    most people like to not have too many penalties for any attribute, and have nice bonuses on their important attributes.

    now, you have 6 ability scores, so you have to choose which ones are important for your character. if you want to make a fighter, you could do:

    str:14
    dex:14
    con:14
    int:11
    wis:10
    cha:10

    that would cost 25 points to do, and would be a balanced fighter with no penalties from mental abilities. You would get +2 to damage and to hit rolls from your strength, +2 to armor class from your dex and +2 hit points per level from your con. You would also get bonuses to any skills or saving throws associated with certain attributes.

    you get an extra attribute point every 4 levels, so you could raise your int at level 4 (to get a +1 bonus on stuff associate with int), raise you strength at levels 8 and 12, and raise your con at levels 16 and 20...

    so when you finish, the character would be

    str:16
    dex:14
    con:16
    int:12
    wis:10
    cha:10

    which could be a very powerful and well rounded fighter...

    you can mix and match the point buy to suit your needs, but a nice balance between your attributes is a good thing to aim for.

    Any questions and I'm happy to answer :)
