Another year, another batch of Academy Awards...and to go along with them, my heavily researched predictions. For those who donÂ’t know, these little statues mean a great deal to me. Some people watch the Super Bowl, others the World Series or U.S. Open or PGA Tour, or what have you...me? I watch the Oscars. And believe me, I watch the Oscars. IÂ’m on the edge of my couch, occasionally sweating nervously as names are read from their cards in-between cornball jokes read off of Teleprompters. See, every year for the last decade or so, my Father and I have participated in a little gentlemenÂ’s bet to see who can accurately predict the most awards. And in these last ten years, I have lost only once, and tied once. Beyond that, IÂ’ve won every time, and believe me, IÂ’ve learned from those failures.Read on!

The oscars have nothing to do with actual best films, remember, these films are based on L.A. biz people, many of whom have never even seen the film...

I think the biggest problem is that they hardly
ever make original movies anymore. Everything is
just a remake of an older movie/tv show/whatever.
And then if it isn't a flat out remake, it's usually just
a vehicle for someones burdgeoning film career,
using a rehashed story you've seen a million times
before in other movies/shows.

Insomnia was an excellent film produced and set in Norway in 1997. It doesn't matter where it was made it is a fucking excellent film in it's own right. But no it does to Hollywood! Now they must have bribed Nolan with a big budget feature to come after this remake, to get him do this Americanized version set now in Alaska, and starring Al Pacino and Robin fucking Williams!?!? Why did the news of this remake fill me with rage? IT JUST DOES!! Agh.

I might consider giving it Denzel Washington as well. Training Day was a lot better than I thought it was going to be, only because of him.
Halle Berry? If there is any justice in the world it should go to Sissy Spacek.
Shrek -- what is with people? Monsters Inc. is 10x the movie Shrek is. In general I think the academy is smart enough to make the right choice here.

I mean, I don't have anything against the guy, his show is funny, but WHY WHY WHY make a movie? At least have the decency to make something that is of such high quality that to get it right to the consumers, they have to release it right to video.
The whole movie will be him running around like it was a show, yelling Crike and shit, and then there will be some lame ass bad guy or corporation or some shit that wants to ruin the environment, or kill some animals or something "bad" like that and the Steve is going to unleash a croc on the bad guy(s) and win.
there, I've already seen it and I even though that took just a few minutes, those are minutes I'll never have back...

That is the saddest thing I've ever read. Proof that people will watch anything, I guess.

Since you seem very knowledgable about the Oscars, I'd be curious who you think should win, instead of who will. If not for everything, at least the major catagories..
Well, at least they're not as bad as the Grammys.

Anyways, I really wish I could've caught Donnie Darko in a movie theater SOMEWHERE. Anyone here seen it in one?

If it is, why the hell don't they just use the original actor? He speaks English. They're probably going to fuck it up like they did La Femme Nikita.

insane. i DO think it was pretty cool that Moulin Rouge got nominated. in the comparitively short time i've had the dvd, i've probably watched it more than any other dvd i own. super movie, and i wish it could win best pic, but i have a sinking feeling your prediction will be the correct one.
i too will be watching on sunday on the edge of my seat!

Picture: Moulin Rouge (please)
Director: Robert Altman
Actor: Denzel Washington
Actress: Halle Berry
Supp. Actor: Ian McKellan
Supp. Actress: Jennifer Connelly
Yeah, and I wouldn't go calling Insomnia a new movie since it's a remake of a movie from 1998 that has a wonderful Criterion DVD available for it. Why they remake movies that were already great is beyond me. Anyway, the best movie of last year was still Amelie, but oh well, it will win Foreign Film.
