New Tomb Raider Announced

Gamespot already previewed the game last night (story), but Eidos officially announced the new Tomb Raider game today. Hopefully removing the "suck" from the last few games. The Angel of Darkness will be a PS2/PC only game, and should be released later this year. As you could read in the Gamespot preview, Lara Croft has "changed".

The game employs a brand new engine built from the ground up to fully utilise the power of PlayStation 2 and the latest PC graphics cards. Lara is now made up of over 5,000 polygons as opposed to just 500 in previous Tomb Raider games. She must traverse an intricately detailed world, which takes her from the back streets of Paris to the hellish depths of Prague. Lara has changed since her experiences in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. She has become darker, harder, less tolerant and her tomb raiding days are a distant memory. A desperate phone call from her former mentor Von Croy leads her to Paris. Von Croy has been asked by a sinister client, Eckhardt, to track down one of five 14th century artworks - the Obscura Paintings. She arrives in Paris to find a city in fear. Von Croy has been the victim of a horrific murder and framed for the crime, Lara has no option but to go on the run.
The official site has opened as well, though at the moment it's really slow.

  • There's no way you couldn't see this coming. Core Design made another game called "Eden" or something. Never played it but since it didn't do as well as Tomb Raider is must suck, right? (derisive laugh)

Eidos will milk Lara until her boobs sag. There is so much money waiting to be made from Lara Croft that Eidos wouldn't be a publishing company if they didn't milk Core for all it's worth. Those idiots shut down the division of ION storm that made Anachronox (I forget if it was Austin or Dallas or what) so they can bite me. If Anachronox had been made as a console game, it would have been a HIT.

I have some hope for this game. It may not be total, utter crap. But I'll wait for the reviews before I fish it out of the bargain bin, heh.

Has anyone seen the Tomb Raider comics from Top Cow? They're actually a pretty talented group of writers and artists... brought in Witchblade, Fathom and Rising Stars and a few others. It actually looks a lot more interesting than the games...

Any story about a big-breasted dumb heroine with a cocky attitude can die on the drawing board, as far as I'm concerned.

  • At the time it was released I thought the first Tomb Raider game was great. The graphics and 3D environments seemed pretty incredible back then. I'm kinda looking forward, cautiously, to this one and I hope they make something great again.

I didn't care too much for the cookie-cutter follow-ups but it sounds like they're making something for this generation of machines that adds cool new elements but also keeps a section like the old games.

I doubt it will be but it would be cool if the adventure section is more like the Sierra games (e.g. Gabriel Knight 3) rather than Final Fantasy (which would also be cool, however).

Good luck to them and, if it turns out to suck, oh well.
