Secret 3DRealms Game
by Steve Gibson, Mar 18, 2002 12:58pm PSTWell here's something to get you guys going. According to a recent Gamasutra article (registration required) we may be seeing a new game announced at E3 2002 by 3DRealms. If 3DRealms is internally developing the title, or if development has even begun at all has yet to be determined.
George [Broussard] and I have studied and discussed characters for almost a decade, and finally in the last 56 years we think we've put together the key pieces of the puzzle better than anyone else in this industry. A bold statement, maybe, but consider that we planned Max to be the next great male action character and franchise from day one of the games design, and guided Remedy (the developers) in the key ways to make it happen. And we're going to do it again with two more coming game characters, Bombshell (appearing first in Duke Nukem Forever before starring in her own games), and another game I can't announce yet (wait for E3 2002).Given the size of the team at 3DR, I would lean towards it being a planned future product after Duke4, or another one of the many side projects 3DR gets involved with such as Max Payne and Duke: Manhattan Project. Maarten thinks it is Prey over at HumanHead

Duke's certainly a well rounded, mature character known for his realistic and sensative dialogue. And that Max Payne, eh? Felt like I was watching a Ken Loach movie. Nice to see you guys haven't lost touch with reality!
No one announced anything. Since I wrote the quotes used in that Gamasutra article, six months ago, we've cancelled one project, and going back a year ago, another big external project was cancelled for the PS2. The stuff George wrote is several years old, I believe, published in a book that came out in 1999. This stuff happens all the time. It's damn well funny to see it pop up now as if it was news. ;-)
BTW, I will happily admit I'm an arrogant prick, and by golly I wish more developers were, too. But most developers are afraid to say what they think in public. Look around, you'll see it's true, they all walk on egg shells.
But Apogee (and by extension, 3DR) has always had a bad boy reputation, and don't expect us to change. It's more fun being a prick. ;-)

all this talk only deflects the one and only important thing:
where is DNF???
I do not care about "secret games". first they need to finish
not so secret games and than we'll start worrying about what is
next.
and Max Payne is not that much of an "action hero".
game was excellent but complete absence of multiplayer usually
kills majority of later sales. there is no staying power for a game
like that whereas Half-Life was able to extend sales for years by
having multiplayer aspect as well as excellent single player.
I take more pragmatic "what have you done for me lately" approach
as opposed to "ohh my company foo that made blah 5 years ago and now
they are working on an uber secret game that will rock".
how about some proof of finished products??? afterall Max Payne
was not 3DR. it was "Produced by 3DR" developed by Remedy.
what's next? Activision claiming they made Doom???
give me a break. better yet give me DNF :) and then we'll talk.

I will say this one time only, and only on this site, because it's a non-story and therefore we do not want to talk about it and generate more attention: Talon Brave is not coming back. We have long ago dropped the trademark on that name.
>>> That being said, what would possibly possess 3DR from announcing a "new" game without providing the gaming press with even a brief quarterly update on the status of "known" or announced projects? Obviously, you don't owe anyone an explanation or information on a given projects' progress, but this most recent article posted on Gamasutra seems to indicate a lack of consistency (and compromised credibility) from 3DR. <<<
We've always got ideas brewing, and deals in the works. Most of them never pan out and are never heard about. Most developers have unannounced games that they hope to get to one day. It's no big deal.

I mean shouldn't they be surfing porn instead, so we can get some more stripper and porn movie maps in the game?
dddddd
Long time ago (when those DNF screen shots came out) one of you guys said that you will start releasing info and new screenshots of DNF around 6 months before the DNF approximate release date. Since youÂ’re still not releasing anything, does it mean that DNF not even close to be release in 6 months or so?

Omigod, LOL! I can just picture this "character" -- tits 'n attitude 'n guns, like we've seen a million times before. This is what makes you "put together the key pieces of the puzzle better than anyone else in this industry"? Ha ha ha ha!
The tech they are using is just getting too old to appeal to the gamers of tomorrow when (and if) it is eventually released.
Quake2/Unreal tech/UT tech or whatever it is, at some point they have to decide wether they are going to keep updating the engine to stay competitive with newer stuff coming out (Doom3, Unreal II), or simply stick with one version and eventually finish the product.
My bet is, they have STILL been updating the UT engine. They are probably using the current Unreal II/Warfare build, and as a result have had to make drastic overhauls to the game YET AGAIN (much akin to what occurred when they scrapped the Quake2 engine for Unreal's).
I think the same thing that happened with Daikatana is happening with DNF, and it will either never come out due to developmental/gaming engine changes/obsolete tech issues that created too many probs for the team, or they will start ONCE AGAIN from scratch and we will wait another 3-4 years before it sees the light of day.
DNF is definitely a fitting title for this game: "DUKE NUKEM" is certainly taking "FOREVER".

I have confidence they will get the right formula of action / lines / cameos (movies / games) - humour to make this game (DNF rock)
but I think I speak for all of us when I say,..

I can handle a media blackout. No problem.
I can't handle smug ass developers who constantly masturbate in front of me while not letting me see the porn mag that gave them such massive w00d.
Let me see the porn mag, damn it.

sheeesh.
I mean its not the 2nd coming, its a freaking game.
While im sure everyone will buy Duke4er, no matter when its out, it really needs to kick ass. Otherwise the Daikatana bashing was only foreplay..hehe

A problem with a game taking sooooo long to come out is that the high-mark for games just keeps going up, and what might look uber cool in dev can quickly become old-skool as games just keep on coming that push the envelope just that little bit further. This is my greatest fear for TF2, what was a great idea at the time, is just taking too long to develop. And in the end will offer what new features that we don't already have in numerous other games?
Will this rambling rant never end? Yes. Ummmm... what point was i trying to make anyway?

I have to believe that.
My girlfriend hates computers and FPS games but knows about Duke Nukem. In fact every FPS game she sees me play is ," oh are you playing Duke Nukem again"......
The chics dig Duke :-)

Hahahah I love there ego. They make one great game in Duke3d so many years ago and ever since then scott & george just love to gloat as if they're the best in the industry. Sorry guys Duke3d kicked ass but we need a bit more then that to accept such a ridiculou statement "anyone else in this industry" hahaha.

While I am a big fan of your products and I will assuredly buy your upcoming game, I would like to suggest that you hold off announcements of future projects until you get DNF out the door. All these announcements accomplish at this time is to open yourself up to flaming by the worst of trolls and retards who use the current unfinished status of DNF as ammunition to give themselves some marginal illusion of credibility.

If this is true, didnt 3d realms say that they wouldnt do the hype thing such as announce a game thats like years away and would only start talking once a game is pretty close to being done? This would seem to contradict their previous words. Not a flame just trying to make since why they would suddenly change?
