Sunday Night ShackReviews

by jason bergman, Mar 17, 2002 7:13pm PST

Another week, another batch of games added to the ShackReviews database. Tonight I've got another collection of old-school PC titles, since those are what seem to be the most requested of late, along with some various other games. If there's something you want to review but don't see, don't forget to submit it...I won't remember to do it otherwise. Anyway, here's what's new tonight:

Incidentally, the addition of Marathon 2 raises a good question...the original Marathon was a Mac-only title. Should our PC category be expanded to include Mac titles? There aren't really enough Mac-only games to warrant its own category (at least I don't think so) so any comments on the subject are much appreciated.

  • I think it is definately a good idea. There are plenty of Mac-only games that are worth reviews, and I can name many that are relatively popular on the platform. If you're going to include PC classics like Doom, you might as well include Mac classics like Marathon, or even go further and include Ambrosia Software's great games (Maelstrom, Bubble Trouble, Escape Velocity, and my favorite, Harry the Handsome Executive), plus the Mac-only RPGs (some of which I think are HIGHLY overrated) like Realmz, and the four Exile games. Then, hell, include the black and white classics, like Onyx or Daleks or Shufflepuck Cafe...
Okay, so maybe that's a bit too far. But a look at Ambrosia's latest Shareware offerings will reveal that, while they don't LOOK as good as the PC games, they are pretty damn fun!

  • About posting reviews of Mac Games, I think it's a good thing. Firstly, I've seen reviews here of games that appear on multiple platforms. Secondly, how can having more content on your site possibly be a bad thing (so long as you don't have to remove other content to make room for it). Third, if you don't have a lot of Mac readers on the Shack (and let me assure you, you have more than you think) then this would be a good way to bring a few in. Lastly, I've seen some pretty ridiculous Mac-prejudice, Mac-myths and some pretty childish jabs against the Mac in these forums; maybe having Mac users as fellow readers and contributors would set that stuff straight and give everyone a chance to learn something (Mac users included). I say go for it.
