Late Night Consoling

Well let me just say woo hoo! Square and Nintendo are finally burying the hatchet (or possibly the president, as the case may be). This means that we'll get to see Final Fantasy remakes for the Game Boy Advance (including FFVI, my favorite in the series), and some GameCube titles to boot. Final Fantasy XI seems like it'll probably wind up for GC now, but I have to wonder how they're going to deal with the lack of storage space. The PS2 version requires the HDD add-on, and to play the game you first install the PlayOnline software on the HDD, and then boot up the FFXI disc. Considering how pathetically small those GC memory cards are (don't even try to defend them - they're 1/3 of the size of a floppy for god's sake) Square may have to release some other solution of their own (which is a possibility, as they're shipping their own PS2 modem for the game), or require the still-unreleased SD-card adapter to play the game. Regardless, this is a great sign for FF fans. I wonder if that long-discussed Xbox agreement will ever happen...

Console Game of the Evening: Final Fantasy VI for the SNES and PSOne. Pure gaming magic. The opera sequence in this game is among my favorite gaming moments of all-time, up there with the day I actually caught the Babel Fish and seeing Samus remove her helmet.
