Jaquays Departs id
by Steve Gibson, Mar 08, 2002 4:26pm PSTPaul Jaquays, level designer for id Software for almost 5 years exactly is departing the company to work at Ensemble Studios. No huge soap operas or pissing matches, but a simple note from Paul saying his heart just wasnt in it anymore. Of course since this is the first question people will ask, Paul added this:
[...] P.S. and dont worry about Doom, the guys who have been doing all the really cool stuff for the game are still busting their chops hard as ever on it.

your at the top of the industry, you work with the best, making the best cutting edge stuff, and after 5 years you just don't have your heart in it anymore? I would work there forever if I had the chance

If DOOM 3 has that "old school scare the piss out of your scrotum" look and feel. I'm going to enjoy having nightmares for a while.
Wow, that was way too much urine metaphors.

not working :-(
this is a no-win situation. id has a huge fanbase, but if they deviate from the formula they get flamed ad infinitum on message boards like this one. i think id has the capability to make a great single player game, one that is horrifying and creepy and fun and everything we have wanted since we last played Doom.
the problem is that if they focus on a great singleplayer experience at the expense of time spent on multiplayer modes and bells and whistles, half the people here will complain that they didn't replicate the doom deathmatch experience with prettier graphics.
i would hate to work at id under that sort of pressure, though i think carmack has the cajones to say "fuck it" and just do what feels right. and i hope they got the deathmatch experience out of their system with Quake3/Team Arena and they can buckle down and make a great singleplayer game, because they have said about all there is to say when it comes to FFA, TDM, and CTF. I am not against them throwing in a few token DM levels and polishing up some decent network code (but I hope they leave it to that afterthought that it should be).
And i hope between now and the release of Doom3, some of the fanboys do a little growing up and are able to realize that possibly no game will ever be as fun (for them) as Doom/Doom2 was.
I don't think sitting through another 2-4 years of people flaming id for changing the gameplay sounds fun.
just my .02

All that "cool stuff" remark worries me a bit. I think he means engine effects :|
