Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Mar 06, 2002 8:30pm PSTThis article at CNNmoney talks with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto about the world of online gaming. He reiterates that Nintendo as a company doesn't see much promise in the world of online gaming, and he even compares it to another thing common in many games that you'll never find in one of his:
"Online gaming, like using violence in games, is just one method of introducing gaming to the public," he said. "And there are other methods that can be used."He does continue, and gives more reasons here than we've heard from most places, but it seems pretty clear that Nintendo won't be exploring any online opportunities for some time, if ever. That pretty much means you can rule out anything like Hyrule Online, Super Smash Bros. with dozens of people simultaneously, or any sort of Metroid deathmatch.
- No shockers here...Ubi-Soft has officially announced Rayman 3: Hoodlam Havoc for every next-generation system (shouldn't that be "current generation" now?) and PC. The first shots can be found at PS2.IGN.
- It's already available for virtually every other platform, but nonetheless, the GameCube version of Agent Under Fire has gone gold. Look for the Palm, Amiga, Jaguar and 3DO versions soon.
- According to "high ranking retail sources" quoted by Cube.IGN, Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 2 will be released here in the US this October. RE2 is a port (not a remake) of the PSOne original, while RE0 is a prequel that was originally in development for the N64, but was canceled in favor of a GC version.
- Still more GameCube fun: two Sega sports titles have been bumped up a week, and will now be released on March 19th.
- GameSpot has posted details and impressions of the Xbox, PS2, GameCube and Game Boy Advance versions of Spider-Man: The Movie, which as its title would seem to suggest, will be out this summer to capitalize on the big-screen movie.
- For those who haven't kept on top of things, here's a good recap of the status of Sony's PS2 online network. Apparently Sony's going to be talking about it at GDC later this month.
- For those interested, Sony is now taking pre-orders for the North American version of the PS2 Linux kit (thanks Cadbury). The pre-order page stresses that this HD is not compatible with HDD-enhanced games (it's only for Linux).
- Here's an interesting look at the Japanese Xbox launch, from a financial analyst's perspective.

As much as I like the PS2, I can see the problem the dreamcast had, it can run NeoGeo games fine, but can it load the sonofabitch into memory first...

Side note: I am no linux guru I just like to putz around with it. I also see this as a way to get all the online gear at once with having the added bonus of getting to run linux on your PS2.
First this link tells how somone was able to get linux and gaming to work with simple partitioning (Japanese version).

the following links show the ps2 running linux.
The kit itself. Note that the broadband modem is only that, no dial up connection. This will be available on the retail version however.

The kit is $199 and will ship in may.
This also means there might be a good chance that the network will be up by then. There has been several postings of people getting notices stating that they are selected for the beta testing.

His statement regarding no need for violence in his games is pretty ridiculous as well. It may not be gory violence, but last time I checked, you beat the hell out of your opponents in SSB:M.
He strikes me as being genuinely out of touch. I remember when I thought Nintendo was infallible. Hah, I must have had my head in the sand, or something.
I never really got Rayman 2, I loved the first one but missed the 2nd one, but if the third looks that good in the end I may just have to check it out.
And whaddahell is goin' on with RE0? Haven't heard or seen anything about it since the N64 version...

I've been playing Nintendo games basically since I started playing games, but now I'm starting to lose the faith in them.

Regardless, the GCN is the system for party games right now, and playing with other people is what makes online multiplayer so great, right? But sitting in your room alone playing games online doesn't compare to sitting around the living room with three of your friends, trash talking and celebrating together.
Too bad EA Big punked out and didn't make NBA Street for GCN 4 player like they were going to, that would have really helped to establish the system as the choice for multiplayer games.

They dont seen to care about innovation, it's always re-hash after re-hash for them...until they're forced to do what everyone else is doing because they decide to listen to their customers.
