New AMD March 20
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 05, 2002 10:37am PSTThe Inquirer is reporting that the latest AMD CPU core will be introduced soon, March 20. The new Athlon XP CPU will use the Thoroughbred core, which is based on a 0.13 micron process and has the VCore changed to 1.65. On March 13 AMD will release the XP 2100+, which is still based on the current Palomino core. Update: Ok, now they're saying we won't see the new core on March 20.

Check out overclockers.com's database of overclocks. An min overclock basically guaranteed to 2.3-2.4GHz for the P4-1.8A versus a max of 1.8GHz for the similarly priced XP1900+.
I know there is more than speed measured in GHz to a cpu(Apple has claimed for a long time that their slower cpu's are actually faster too) but there is that whole "they fry in half a second if the heatsink comes loose" thing too. And I've actually had a heavy heatsink fall off after a clip snapped so that is a consideration. I will sleep better knowing my P4 won't fry itself.
P4-1.8A retail for $186, Athlon XP1900+ OEM for $180. Both use DDR ram and the motherboards are in the same price range too.
Besides the basic "Intel sucks" argument are there any flaws in my logic?

UPDATE - Kyle: My sources are telling me that the TBred will not be launched on the date shown by the InqWell, but I certainly wish it were true. Honestly, AMD will usually work closely with us to make sure we have samples of such CPUs in hand well before the launch of a new chip. While we can't really comment directly on that, I can say that the only new ponies at my house are Palominos
