John Romero on Daikatana

ZDTV has an interview with John Romero of ION Storm  talking about progress on everyone's favorite Daikatana.

Game's coming along really good. We're gonna release for about Christmas. We won't say third-quarter, but we'll say fourth-quarter and just kind of give ourselves a little bit of room there. You can see the single player demo here at E3 as well as you saw the multiplayer demo that was online. And you know we've gone beyond that of course

  • Oh, Daikatana! I remember hearing something about that game... 2 years ago or something? Wasn\'t that a Quake1 killer? Oh yea.. that\'s right, that\'s when John Carmack made a public comment about John Romero failing, sooner or later? I think it all started sliding down hill, right around when Mike Wilson left. Biggest mistake made by ION Storm.

The fact that the plug hasn\'t been stil pulled, is just so pathetic. But then again.. how many millions did Eidos invest? Ouch.. I guess any income at all, will return some of that investment. Hell, who knows -- maybe if the game sells by Christmas 2001, it will be sold as an antique; and maybe as a gesture of sympathy, some people will actually buy it -- then maybe.. just maybe, they will break even.

I would hate to be JR right now -- the pressure coming from all sides must be quite overwhelming. But no sweat J, another publisher will eventually buy the \"hair\" bait, and with a brand new team, fresh start and a good-decision-making CEO, who knows.. it may even work.

As far as Daikatana goes -- I doubt I will even bother to download the pirated version; too much efforts. And needless to say, I woud never consider buying it.

  • I don\'t think people are making judgements about the game so much as getting tired of hearing, \"coming along really good...\" or something. We know it\'s \"coming\", we\'re just tired of hearing about it and seeing nothing.

Perfect example, I was hyped about 9-10 months ago about HG2 (Heavy Gear 2 for those of you who don\'t play mecha games). Now for some reason it got pushed back some ridiculous amount of time and only last week was released. In the interim, I bought Mech3 which I heard very little about until two weeks before release. At which point I was blown away. Not by all the stupid-assed .plans, not by all the useless interviews with programmers, level designers, et. nauseum, but by the game itself.

I don\'t think anyone who\'s tired of hearing about Dyke-atana would disagree with me when I say, \"Stop doing the useless interviews and finish the damn game already. Put up or shut up.\" :P

No offence JR, but going almost 2 years past your predicted release date is FUBAR man. There\'s just no excuse for something like that to happen. I know what everyone\'s thinking, that I have no idea what\'s invovled in software dev cycles and just how convoluted the release of software is from inception to gold. Hardly.

Anyway, done ranting, please return to your incessant, pointless flaming ;)

  • First of all, why must people who post dumb shit have to contain \'rez\' in their name? g/d. Again, im going to say, you havent played the full release, so you can not judge it. Basically you are saying you dont like your Christmas present, in the middle of July. You wreak like a spoiled little child.

Every game has potential, and every game is great in its own way. Differents strokes of your w00drow, for different folks.

Personally Im glad to see Daikanata coming along. John has worked so hard on this game, and you can tell, with every update he makes, es ecstatic about it.
