Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Feb 28, 2002 6:00pm PSTSo just to be frisky we're reworking the top of the page design a bit over the next few weeks. The double 468x60 banners are going away in place of a single slightly larger banner. (Like the banners you see at the top of ZDNet, 728x90). Working on a few more changes as well (When am I not?). As long as we can keep avoiding pop-ups and make enough $ to buy me that solid gold mouse and keyboard I'm happy. Here's the stuff for the evening:
- Massive Earth probe set for launch - Clones grow up to be tubby. - iPod = pirate pod - The Drink or Die piracy group guy admits to being guilty - Morpheus in trouble - Covert action targets SaddamLastly, hope everyone enjoyed the Condition Zero article. Looking forward to those videos next week to show off the levels.

Hubble to see edge or universe or beginning of time?
I've read a lot about the upgrades to the Hubble Telescope lately, but on the radio this afternoon I heard it will be 10x more powerful and able to see 12 billion years into the past. Can anyone confirm this? I can't find an article which says that, but it was clearly read out on the radio earlier today.

Looks like Microsoft isn't promising to leave out nonessential "feature" add-ons from the service packs anymore.

Cant think of anything to write again today. Maybe i'll promise more features that wont get implemented for a few months. Did you all have fun watching Survivor? We dont get shitty shows like that in our windmills but maybe one day! I continue to be a lazy bastard but what can you do? Oh maybe i'll bitch some more about my crappy plane ride to E3 today? or maybe hit on Aveil again! or get drunk! all good ideas.

It's nice to go out on the porch, have a cup of coffee, and watch what $5 million pen wielding, fat, lazy, stupid, too much tv watching, McDonald burger chewing Americans can accomplish.

(Ive tried PGR, Halo and Munchs Oddysee already) and I must say its the coolest game since Tony Hawk2 IMHO. The controls are perfect, the graphics aint -all- that but still better than any other boarding game.
I love the style and the ideas behind the game and the tricks are all intuitive to pull off.
Now Im gonna be pissed of for 2 more weeks until I get my Xbox, gah

This is what I've got right now. The function takes a number (like 1.21E-7, or 124ns) and rounds it up or down to the nearest 5ns:
double Round_PW(double PW)
{
/*
* To make waveform generation easier (easier resolution determination),
* we want to ensure that the PW of the waveform is divisible by 5ns. To
* do this, we need to round the PW to the nearest 5ns.
*
* Up-Conversion:
* We take the PW, multiply it by 1E+9 (reciprocal of 1ns) to shift the PW
* value to the left (whole number) side of the decimal point so we can
* work with it.
*
* Rounding:
* We then divide it by 5 (5ns * 1E+9 == 5), and then cast the floating point
* result as an integer value (adding .5 before the cast to ensure we round
* up to the next integer value if needed). This gives us the # of times 5ns
* goes into the PW, to the nearest 5ns (up or down).
*
* Down-Conversion:
* We multiply the rounded result by 5 to get our rounded "whole number"
* PW, and then multiply this number by 1ns to shift the PW value back to
* the right of the decimal point where it belongs, casting the result as a
* double floating point number.
*
*
*/
return static_cast<double>(((static_cast<int>(((PW *= 1E+9)/5) + .5))*5) * 1E-9);
}
Any thoughts on a better way to do this?
