Germany Bans More Games

The Krawall Gaming Network is reporting (through crappy translation services by Google), that Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Unreal Tournament have both been put on the infamous German game index list, meaning they can no longer be advertised and can only be sold to people above 18 (at least thats what I make of the translated text). This was announced by the BPjS, the German law enforcement agency who decides these things. There was no reason given for the fact that Unreal Tournament is indexed after being out since 1999. The Return to Castle Wolfenstein sold in Germany was already an altered version of the game, but not good enough apparently. Previously Max Payne and Rune were put on the game index (ban) list.

  • Less than perfect, but better than Google:

    Return to Castle Wolfenstein
    Likewise indexed

The 28th of February will certainly remain long in the memory of local Shooter-Fans:
for the first time two top titles were indexed on the same day. As already reported,
BPjS put Epic's "Unreal Tournament" on the Index. But that wasn't enough - as we have
already discovered, Gray Matter's "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" now also resides on
    the Index.

Most interesting of all, "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" was indexed in spite of the
softened [lit. "defused/disarmed"] German version. Details about the motives are
unclear here at the moment, but we are trying once again to get a statement from BPjS.
The indexing of Activision's top title likewise means an absolute advertising and coverage
    blackout.

    Unreal Tournament
    Resides on the BPjS-Index today

As we were able to learn from the BPjS, as of today Epic Games' Production-shooter
"Unreal Tournament" (released: Fall '99) resides on the Index of the Bundespruefstelle
fuer jugendgefaehrdende Schriften [Federal 'Checkpoint' for Youth-Endangering Media],
BPjS for short. Miss Kortlaender validated this in a telephone call with us. Reaons for
the extremely late indexing were not reported by the BPjS.

For the beloved Multiplayer-Game an advertising and coverage forbiddance is now in place,
with which we must also comply. The title, released at the outset for "under 18", can now
only be purchased by submitting personal ID. "Unreal Tournament" joins top-class titles
such as "Rune" and "Max Payne", that were likewise indexed in the previous month at the
    recommendation of the youth agency.

  • I live in germany and experience the shit going on over here live.. Wolfenstein is the most controverse game around for a lot of the politicians, because it deals with nazi history.. I for my part enjoyed kicking some nazi's ass, just because its fuckin fun to show the nazi assholes the way to go.
But why the hell would they put it on the index with all nazi features being removed (as it was in the altered version)? Apparently just for the violence, which i think is neither a that big controversy..
It's very strange how nazi stuff is dealt witch here.. Swastikas displayed in movies are allowed (as in war movies or indiana jones etc..) because its considered art; in games its not allowed.. Means: Games are not art for the stupid krauts here! Goddamnit what the hell?
Also, Unreal tournament on the index? WTF? I mean its been out for ages, also in an altered version.. now some jerk in some ministry decided - ah lets reconcider that game.. gee.. where are we going to here in germany? im over 18 so thats not a that big problem with UT, but with wolfenstein - its forbidden in the original version here! means, you can be feed for the alone posession of the US or GB version.. thats what i call a supreme gouvernment.. i want my freedom to decide wether i wanna play Wolfenstein in original or not!
Smash the state. Or the keyboard in frustration! damn you germany.
