NVidia and Xbox2?

From the "crazy rumors" department comes news from The Inquirer, where they are reporting about Microsoft's plans for the Xbox 2 (already?). Supposedly NVidia won't be part of it. Instead ATI and VIA will be trying to score the contract for the graphics chip. VIA is supposedly also in the race to provide the chipset and CPU. Uh huh. Thanks Chris.

Y'know what the problem is? Nvidia charges Microsoft just a little bit too much for its technology and Microsoft wants to lose just that little bit less on each X-Box it sells. More. While Via reckons it could scoop the opposition and get the graphics chipset and the CPU business, it has one major competitor in the final running and that happens to be little Canadian company ATI.

  • It's all about getting the price of the box down. Intel/Nvidia are too greedy and that results in an at cost, $300 Xbox thats graphics looks no better then any current PC game.

Via based CPU/chipset could make it way cheaper. ATI seems to really want to be number 1.

I have some suggestions for ATI. :)

    1. Release R250/300 today. Don't wait. There's nothing to wait for.
    2. It MUST be faster then the fastest GF4. If not, don't bother releasing it. And keep the price down. More performance at less cost then GF4. No one in their right mind would buy a GF4.
    3. How hard can it be to get more people, or better people, to write some top quality, decent drivers? With basically unlimited money and the population of the world, I fail to see why the drivers suck.
