New Renegade Patch

by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 19, 2002 3:42pm PST

An important C&C Renegade demo patch has been released on Fileplanet. This patch will hopefully take care of the nasty lag problems as well as a few other things. It's a mere 685kb download. An updated demo is on Fileplanet as well. Update: here is a Fileshack mirror of the 1.07 patch courtesy of Speakeasy.

List of Changes In the 107 Patch 1. Found and corrected a problem creating extensive lag. 2. We turned off the dedicated server requirement. 3. Reduced the bandwidth test. 4. Reduced time spent in the initial splash screen. 5. Fixed a bug that was creating instability in the server.
6. Added a version check.

As Xian mentioned, it determines the max number of clients if you setup through the GUI. And 4 seems to be the magic number... If it sees a number higher than 4, it MAKES it 4. Okay, they've messed because I refuse to believe that The Ohio State University's redundant OC-3's, connected by 10/100 switching, can only support 4 people.

So I figure out how to setup a dedicated server and do so. People connect and comment on how good things are. Hoorj.

So I go to one of the other PC's around me, get the demo setup (skipping GameSpy of course) and plan on connecting manually.

    "renega~1.exe +connect macrossone.dhs.org"

    ...

    Server connection refused.

Okay, well lets let ASE take a swipe. Find, download, install, configure. Try to connect and... OH. It seems that 1.07 *BROKE* ASE compatibility. Yeah, I bet that's a coincidence.

Fine you ass-plowers, I'll install GameSpy. Do that, configure it and try to connect to my own server, 10 feet away from me. Nothing. Just chills at the connection screen.

Whatever. Screw this stuff if they are going to make it so hard. A menu option to connect to an IP address? Just throw me a bone here people. A console command? A commandline option? Forget this.

Oh yeah, and so when I was running a listen server last night, there were the usual lamers being, well lame. So I hit tilde and a little console drops down. Good sign... I type 'ki' and it autocompletes to 'kick'... and 'kick' doesn't work. Only supported on WOL servers. Fuck this shit. I'll wait for the next good id engine game, that can be admin'd as god john carmack god john carmack god john carmack god intended. Not only had that wheel already been invented 6 years ago, it was invented properly. Westwood has lost a sale until they stop forcing people to play their way.
