Renegade Patch
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 18, 2002 7:06am PSTFileplanet and Renegade Extreme are hosting a patch for the C&C Renegade demo. It's a small 447kb download, and fixes the following things which should hopefully result to less lag in some cases.
1. The Renegade Demo will automatically detect and set your bandwidth
2. Contraints have been created to ensure appropriate server bandwidth 3. Added a command to report important performance values
4. Found and removed some memory leaks that were affecting server performance 5. Miscellaneous bug fixes and improved server stability

Like how you HAVE to go through their gaming service to play online games (because you know it's just soooo complicated to host our own game without their stupid server. GameSpy, what's that?)

F*ck Westwood. F*ck 'em directly up their retarded butthole. I have had an intense dislike for them ever since Tiberian Sun was a pile if poop instead of groundbreaking. And then Red Alert 2's inability to allow the gamer to do certain things like host a game outside of their shitty proprietary software you had to install and log into.
I will NEVER, EVER buy another Westwood game because they refuse to listen to their fans and customers no matter how much you request things on their messageboards. (I still vividly remember a number of RedAlert2 players repeatedly asking for certain features to be added via a patch to the game and all our requests fell on deaf ears.)
Then again, I guess when your company makes most of its money selling multiplayer versions of Monopoly and whatever other simple games**, you expect your customer base to have little-or-no computer skills and be middle-aged housewives.
*no offense to liberal socialists in politics. It's just when it comes to games you don't start thinking for the gamers, you let them be able to configure things themselves.
** No offense to those who play such games - they're great games, but when your company makes other games it shouldn't assume all game customers are equally computer illiterate and create games where everything configureable is pre-set and pre-decided for you.

Quake III is terrible for outdoor combat and it's not designed for. Thank god they didn't use th UT engine or I would go fucking nuts!

Experience - bad
I won't get into the graphics or netcode. Ok, I will. The graphics look like they were put together by a two year old. Honestly. They're GOD AWFUL. Most amatuer stuff looks better. The pillar of light (uh forgot the name, the NOD laser defense tower). Just LOOK at it. Makes my spine shiver. It's three blocks, a door, and a horrid repeating texture. The vehicles are nice though, both in looks and physics.
I'll give it a try again tonight to see if I can find this magical group of people that likes to play as a team or a server that doesn't lag. I'm fairly certain the gameplay really doesn't promote teamplay that well and the netcode and character physics just won't fly on anything about a 75 ping. Not compared to Tribes 2, TFC, or DoD 2.0.

I may not, personally, like the product, but that doesn't give me the right to publicly rag on the product, or have an outburst like that... even on Da Shack =\

The teams are unbalanced tho. GDI seems to have a huge advantage over NOD. A GDI mammoth tank rush with engineers to heal them is very tough.
Also the MLRS for GDI REALLY pwns. Only $400 with multiple unlimited range tracking missles. Weak armor, but who cares when you can jump out and repair it (using the $0 engineer class) whenever you need to?
What can NOD do? A stealth tank rush? Just isn't the same. What's the point of having stealth when you become visible when you fire and it takes 50 hits to kill a building or mammoth tank?
I hope westood is working on some balance fixes...

Irritant: When I DO manage to catch an empty spot, by the time the fucking AUTODETECTING BANDWIDTH bullshit is done with, MY SPOT IS GONE AND THE SERVER IS FULL AGAIN.

The game itself is fun, but I'm having so much problems with it that I'd rather uninstall it for now. I might play it again after a few patches, say 5-6 new ones should fix most of the issues. I give them a few months :/

THanks a lot for this new miracle patch Westwood, i have been unable to join a server since this lag patch was released, and even when i do join a server (one of Westwood's own) Im lagged to hell and so is EVERYONE else...

But now I'm done, and the server is gone. This game is a novelty. All the features are as cool as they sound on paper, but that's it, there's nothing else to the game. After you've had your 3rd or 4th tank duel (where both tanks have seprate gunners and they essentially cirle strafe), the novelty wears off and you start to realize how bad the combat itself actually is. The purchace system is neet at first too, but eventually you keep buying the same 3 or 4 characters and it may as well be team fortress. Destructible buildings rock, there's no way around it, but that's the only thing in this game that didn't get old fast for me.
To sum up, this game has some very cool fancy features, but it lacks in the basics. They should have looked at Quake 3 and UT, make a C&C version of that, and THEN started adding the new ideas.
As it is though, even if it didn't have the bugs, this game was just a weekend distraction for me, not something I could get serious about. I'm in love with the concept, but the gameplay just isn't there.
