Late Night Consoling

You know, I'm usually the first person to spring to the defense of magazine writers, but this was really shocking...apparently two magazines have already run reviews of Eternal Darkness. The reviews aren't spectacular, which would be fine, except for the fact that the game's not done yet! Not only that, it won't be done until the summer, which means the version reviewed (and I'm assuming they did at least play some version) was far from a final build. The lead time on magazines often leads to cases where a game is reviewed before it's complete, but in order to be finished for a publication this month, those reviews would have had to be written back in November or December at the latest. Seven months is a long time in game development, and it's enough time for a game to go into complete turnaround. I don't think there's any sinister intentions going on, but someone really dropped the ball here.

  • GameSpot has posted another one of their great "history of" articles, this time looking at Mortal Kombat. If you can make it all the way through, you'll be treated to some minor tidbits about the next game in the series.
  • Here they are...the first screenshots from Superman: The Man of Steel for the Xbox. Could this be the first decent Superman game to date?
  • Pocket.IGN has posted a whole lot of screenshots from Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars, which will be released next month.
  • Apparently I wasn't the only one surprised by the Resident Evil Online confirmation, as Capcom went and issued a separate statement reconfirming that it is indeed in development for the Playstation 2.
  • Speaking of Resident Evil, an image in Famitsu seems to suggest that the series' always-annoying control scheme has gotten a facelift in the GameCube remake (although this doesn't seem to be any better).
Console Game of the Evening: Superman for the Atari 2600. This weird, confusing, and occasionally downright awful game thrilled me in my youth...although for the record, I was fascinated by anything Superman at the time, so I think that kinda proves my bias.
