Devine on Q3CTF & MrElusive
by Steve Gibson, Sep 29, 1999 10:48am PDTGraeme Devine over there at id Software has a .plan update at fingershack with a couple of items of note. First off is of course the confirmation that in fact there is no grappling hook use in the Q3CTF maps they are shipping, but it will be available for use.
Ah, grappling hook hoopla - when I read about the hoopla over UT grapple CTF I knew we'd have a similar impact (BTW, believe it or not, there is room for both games in the universe!). The grapple code is still going to be in Q3A (through bot reachability and so forth), it's just not on the maps we're shipping with the product. The CTF maps we have in there are designed for non-grapple use. CTF and grapple are not tied implicitly together.Secondly, Graeme has word that Mr. Elusive, the guy behind the Omnicron bot for Quake1, and Gladiator bot for Quake2 has been contracted by id Software to work on the bot code for Quake3. A few astute gamers out there probably already spotted the mrelusive.cfg file in the Q3Test pk3 file and were wondering. Now you know!
Mr. Elusive (aka Jan Paul) is over here from The Netherlands helping finalize the game. He is of course the famed author of the Gladiator bot for Quake II. As some of you have been guessing he's been working with John Cash on the bots in Q3A. We're very pleased to have Jan's expertise on Q3A.

Goin\' on vacation (un north) starting tomorrow, and I have a mission of finishing all unfinished single player games, \'cos I gotta get ready before Q3a and UT both come out. :)
heheh.
They seek him here, they seek him there, and they find him...
Of course I read this page :) Name me one Leet MoFo who doesn\'t include the Shack of Love in their hourly web readings ;)
You going to the NGA on Saturday if it\'s on? :)

but the grapple makes for an interesting tool.. Humilate the enemy by fraggin them with a grapple.. heheheheh hang form high hidden sniper points hehe
and set up a DFA RL D (Death From Above Rocket Launcher Defence) hehe dont ask me.. i didnt make it... hehe
but then you get rid of the wankers that always are out for personal glory.. :) and that means actually trying to help yer team instead of staying on d while one person grapples through the crowd and dodges a bfg blast and escapes with flag...

So here\'s my solution:
I just don\'t understand the drastic rationale of removing the grapple entirely from their maps- more creative, less dulling solutions are out there, such as:
Just disable the grapple for the flag carrier- this has several effects.
1) Same effect of making teamwork more crucial as removing the grapple entirely, but...
2) It gives flag carriers an actual disadvantage, making teamwork REALLY crucial. No grapple for anyone doesn\'t REALLY add teamplay, cus everyone has that disadvantage.
3) It\'s more realistic! Who the hell can manage weapons, a grapple and a flag all at once!
Finally! Someone willing to state the obvious - even knowing that few wanted to hear it.
but seriously, what dont you know about UT?...
I\'m picturing this, and it appears humorous to me.
#21 Hey I said I was going nuts from all this sudden great Q3 news again on the Shack man, cut me some slack here...than again, unlike this Martin guy who is an obvious id and Q3 hater, I would normally stay out of UT related threads, not always offcourse hehehe. And yeah
I like id 1000% better...what\'s wrong about that?
Oh, and bringing Mr. Elusive on board is a nice move. I can\'t wait to see what he can pull off when working this closely with the game designers themselves...
But, he\'s not exactly Elusive anymore is he? :)
I assume you read the wrong post? If i thought id didnt listen i wouldnt be asking.
