Been spending all day playing through the Warcraft3 beta checking out all the different races and options and playing with different tactics. I played as humans most of the time and they are certainly pretty simple to manage. Here's a few shots I've taken, nothing terribly exciting as I have a habit of forgetting to take screenshots when the real excitement happens but I think I can get over that by tomorrow. :) Shots are nice big 1280x1024:

The level system I mentioned yesterday only applies to "hero" characters. You get to use about 3 of these at any time, they are the guys who can also carry inventory and use special items like strength rings or healing potions. They end up for the most part just being exceptionally strong fighters in multiplayer games, but its easy to imagine the single player campaigns taking advantage of this system as you customize your heroes. The 4on4 matches are a real blast as there are so many things that can happen. I buffed up my human riflemen faster than anything and kept running all over the map with a troop of 15 of them taking down air attacks. I was sitting pretty surrounded by allies so didnt have to worry too much about ground attacks.

Grow up. If you cant see past the basic premise of these games and look deeper into what makes the gameplay you are just cheating yourself. I know not many here are hardcore RTS gamers, but try to understand.
TA and blizzard RTS games are very different. RTS is such a wide genre. You shouldnt even be comparing those two games they are so different. TA focuses on huge battles, many units, and big explosions. Blizzard has been evolving their RTS games into more carefully balanced and competitive games. Warcraft III seems to focus on small battles, tactics, and micro management. If you dont like that - fine go play TA. But at least respect the niche that blizzard fills in competitive RTS gaming. Just look at the communities that still flourish in War2 and starcraft.
Blizzard games have not been successfull because of huge technology advances. The have been so popular because of their solid balanced gameplay. People knocking the game right now without playing it, or even judging it by playing the beta for a few hours are just ignorant. Wait till its done, and see how it is.

I play games that I enjoy and think are fun, thats the point. 3D, not 3D, it doesnt matter, if I enjoy it I will play it.

capping armies at 90 for food is understandable, but it should be user configurable too. =]

theres fewer buildings than in wc2 or sc i think, and you get fewer monsters ... but the combinations are greater because your hero can specialize in auras and theres so many different abilities. the units are very neat. like kodo beasts, they eat any enemy unit and then digest it. if your enemy kills it before its done digesting then their unit pops back out unharmed, but if you can run away after the kodo beast eats their unit, their unit dies :) so it can basically kill any unit (except heros) with one attack. another really cool thing is the night elves buildings. they can move around like terran buildings in sc, but they can also attack. they uproot and move very slow but hit for decent damage. after battles, they can eat trees to gain their life back ;0
the game runs decent on my brothers computer, duron 900 with tnt2, 512 ddr ram. he has to lower the settings, and during big battles it gets very choppy, maybe ~5 fps. at max settings on my machine its very smooth at around 60 fps, even in battles. im running athlon 1533 with gf2 and 512 sdram.

War3 introduced an upkeep system. At first sending your minions into the gold mines will produce your 10 gold, just like always. However, as time goes on, your army gets bigger, etc, they'll continue to take 10 gold from the mine, but you only collect 7. Then even later maybe 5. This prevents set-it-and-forget-it massive money maps where you only ever need one giant base to command your whole army from.
Those who live on Big Game Hunters are complaining and want the feature taken out. I think it ought to be a selectable option when starting a new game. Opinions?

TA, imho the best RTS of all time, was fun becasue of the massive, hectic battles you could have. We need sone new games like that, thousands of units, eganged in battle at one time, hundreds of diffent units, massive explosions, sharpnel, realistic physics, balance, great terrain...
IT does not have to bw fully 3d it just has to feal like total war.. none of this 3 units at a time bull shit. I want total fucking chaos.
I also hate the visual style of this game.. it's so blah and generic cartoony.
THin slender caracters with carefully slopping lines, combined with sharp points, waiving hair, stylish lighting and shading, would look so much cooler...

2 years ago it looked great...now it looks ok. A year ago I would have bought it, now i doubt I'll buy it...
maybe im dumb but i find it extremely hard to move your guys around etc with such a limited viewpoint.
wc3 looks like its actually gonna be worse than empire earth in this respect, ugh

Gameplay? Nope. As far as I can see (from the experience of playing Emporer: Battle for Dune) it just gets in the way due to camera management issues, & limits the number of units.
Graphics? Probably, but so what? I'd rather have SC/RA2 quality graphics and decent gameplay.
Am I off-base here? Why does an RTS game need 3D graphics? I just don't see it...

Graphics - pretty.
Gameplay - significantly different unit types and buildings.
Heroes - very cool (I've found the best inventory items are +Armor rings).
Units - very different units, they support each other well.
What I don't like:
Demo is locked at fastest game speed.
Cluttered interface - just look at the screenshots.
Small viewing area - you have to run 1280x1024 or higher to see enough to be useful (I feel sorry for the minimum-specs crowd).
No friendly-fire damage - I'll wade some fighters into an area that I'm bombarding and not take damage.
I've been focusing on Humans to try to get a good feel for them, I'll probably do Night Elves next.
Unless the game slows down, I wouldn't buy this for multiplayer. From a speed/ferocity perspective, its a newer prettier version of Starcraft, without a fantastic change in gameplay, and DAMMIT ITS TOO FAST. If you're going to make the game this fast, at least make it so I can see more on my screen.
