STMicroelectronics Exits Market

According to this Biz Wire release, STMicroelectronics will be withdrawing from the PC graphics market. Last year they had some limited success with their Kyro and Kyro 2 video cards which are based on PowerVR technology. STM is looking for a buyer for the related assets.

Like two days ago I saw a cheap KYRO card at CompUSA. Was tempted to get it because of its speed and price at the time. Now I'm glad I didn't waste my money.

Oh well, back to buying the products of the monopoly aka Nvidia.

Just to clarify: STM is only a licensee of the PowerVR technology. The licensed the chip design and built chips/boards to sell. STM no longer wants to do this. So they are selling their PC graphics hardware assets (which happens to include the license for the PowerVR 4 and PowerVR5 designs). The actual PowerVR IP is not for sale. It never was. The ip for current and future PowerVR designs is still owned by PowerVR. Of course without any hardware partner, they arent exactly in shipshape either.

This is probably not the end for PowerVR; Imagine could find another manufacturer to make the chips and cards. However, the sentiment just isn't out there among the chip manufacturers right now.
