First Post!

by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 03, 2002 6:51am PST

So, Super Bowl Sunday. Go Rams! The last few years Dutch TV has been broadcasting the event, and they will do so again this year. It's about all the football I see each year but its better than nothing. More additions should be on the way this week for the reviews section, such as browsing per genre. But first Jason and I will be looking at improving the layout a bit. But I'm really happy with how popular it is so far. Movie: Look lady, I only speak two languages: English and bad English.

  • EU 2 does everything it predecessor does and them some. It has several major additions to the game play and some handy tweaks. Now included is Japan, China, and all the lesser Asian nations of the time as major powers, which is a welcome change because I really enjoy being a Shogun/Emperor. There is a minor overhaul of the province system of the map round out the world a bit more fully. On the combat side, new leaders, along with historical unit leaders (and their replacements), mercenaries, (basically expensive instant troops) make for cleaner combat resolutions. The AI has been improved slightly; itÂ’s intelligent and relies more in on country management, which has also been made more complex. The country management now includes domestic agendas to flavor your counties even more, selective religious tolerances, a more robust Casus Belli and treaties system, and a slightly tweaked expansion system (you now have a reason *not* to slaughter the natives in a province). The treaty system has been tweaked in other ways as well; cities donÂ’t do *anything* useful until they are seceded over to the conqueror in a peace treaty, and no longer can empires be dismantled wholesale at the peace table (although this did occasionally happen in real history). On the religion front, religions give you bonuses in addition to causing problems, the new non-western religions are a nice touch, and all religions now give game play mechanic bonuses. For example, Protestantism generates an income bonus while Catholicism gives a stability bonus. These sundry additions improve the already robust diplomacy and country management parts of the game. Though not as significant as other improvements, the intro video has received a nice facelift, and is one of the best non-action introductions IÂ’ve seen.
