GTA 4, Massive Multiplayer?
by Steve Gibson, Feb 02, 2002 11:56am PSTWe've gotten a few reports about this and just about everyone has the same reaction. "Woah! Cool!" Without a doubt there will be a sequel to Grand Theft Auto 3. That's not the question really. The question is what type of game it will be, a continuation with a bunch of tweaks, or a push the envelope with all kinds of crazy new stuff. It's starting to sound like the latter, here's a quote from a recent EGM: (Thanks Protoman)
...Grand Theft Auto fans won't go long without another fix of wanton violence and pillaging. GTA3 Xbox is a given (with online play?), but we'll also soon hear the details on GTA4. Rockstar's stayin' silent on the subject, but I could name a few hundred thousand fans ready to part with $50 a piece for it. The current talk indicates that DMA will take the GTA3 framework and turn it into a massively multiplayer online game for the four installment, where you're free to create your own mobs and anyone in the city could be a "real" person. Word is it'll also be set in a real U.S. city this time.

There is a special type of audience that is required to make a MMORPG work. I think D&D-types and FF-nuts are two of the very few groups that make good MMORPG targets.
And figuring I played GTA3 for about 45 minutes when I first bought it 3 weeks ago and haven't touched it since, is there really enough depth in the gameplay to warrant months and months of playing? It didn't even keep me occupied for an hour before I had basically seen all that the game had to offer. (drive, shoot, ... and combinations of the two) I think the ammount of content, experience systems, and skill systems that would need to be added to make GTA4 viable are an insurmountable barrier for such a game.

I'll stake out an unpopular position here & say that perhaps some ideas/games go too far, & should not be made.
When gta3 does come out for the xbox & pc, I will not be buying it. I tried the original gta when it 1st came out, thought it was ok, if a bit tasteless, & that the media reaction was overblown. I've looked at a lot of screenshots of gta3, & read a bunch of reviews, & find nothing worthwhile or rewarding about the concept. They took something that was acceptable in a more "cartoony" (gta) type format & made it way too realistic. From the sound of it, I won't be buying gta4 either, but I will give it a look before deciding.
I know my thoughts on this will be unpopular, but so be it, it's what I think. For those of you who would call me a hypocrite for enjoying standard fps type games, there's a big difference between running around some fantastic environment or historical battleground while fighting for your life and running around a city killing/stealing & in general being a thug. At least, that seems a reasonable distinction to me.

how would the player gain in stature and power?
persitent worlds are often about the character getting more powerful...
would it become a pseudo action rpg? with drive skills and experience and shit?
or would the growth be in the hot rod car you've built up?

A big part of the attraction in GTA3 was that you were the one crazy driving wacko in the city, but if you fill a city with a bunch of wacky drivers then you are no longer a unique and wonderful snowflake.
I can see how cooperative missions would be a blast for sure. Perhaps just have worlds so huge that you arent constantly surrounded by other players. Just like 1-3 other guys tops in most cases.

Ready? Okay here goes...
* NO MONTHLY FEES *
I know with the current trend, it's absolutely UNTHINKABLE to have a massively multiplayer game without monthly fees, but I absolutely guarantee my hatred for monthly fees will eliminate ANY chance of taking part in ANY massively multiplayer game forever and ever amen. I know many of you might disagree with me, but this is just my humble outlook on monthly fees with online games. Charge what price is needed for the game, but no periodic fees please!

It's an interesting proposition-to say the least. I say go for it, but I wouldn't want it in a GTA 4- more of a seperate game, 'cause if the MMOG flopped, I'd still like a Singleplayer based game to fall back on (not that GTA3 isn't good enough, but by that time, I'll be itching for an update).

Actually, I can see how not being able to play for a week would be annoying and maybe it's not realistic idea for the public. Perhaps if there were a few different games going on at once. You could juggle 2 or 3 characters at once, but if all three are dead, you'd have to wait.
example:
Monday you lose one of three of your characters.
Tuesday you lose a second one.
Friday you lose the third one and you have to wait until Monday to create one more character. You'd have to wait one week from friday to have all three again granted you didn't lose monday's and tuesday's characters before Friday.
I guess it's just a thought.

i guess with gta4 being massive multiplayer, its pretty safe to say the pc port of gta3 wont have multiplayer but with gta4 to make up for it.
