Pretty Colors
by Steve Gibson, Jan 29, 2002 10:02am PSTJust a note about the pretty colors I mentioned yesterday. I decided to color code a couple different post categories. Firstly, in the event of a post containing relevant or interesting information about a story at hand, or a post by a developer involved on the project, we'll be marking the post with a teal header so the more interesting/informative posts are easier to spot. Secondly, if a post contains a link that would be considered "Not Work Safe" such as boobies etc, it will have a dark red stripe across the top of the post. They will look like this:
In order to see Not Work Safe posts, you must adjust your options. A couple of notes though, currently in threaded mode subthreads are not capable of showing the color coding until we get a code update. Hopefully we'll get that remedied in the near future. The big fear here being that a change like this may turn threads in to a "look how smart I think I am" pissing match. If that happens, I'll pull the feature. But I'm hoping this just encourages a few more good posts and makes it easier for most people to spot the especially interesting things people or developers say. Also: There are currently no plans for color coding any other categories. If you choose to browse the stupid/trolling posts that's your decision.

I never linked to a nws site as I know of yet.
I've marked it as informative, because really.. it is!

I like the idea of the colored headers, it does allow them to stand out much more easily. However, I would also suggest displaying the text as well, as * N O T W O R K S A F E * is pretty clear to everyone, regardless of their inexperience level with the Shack, whereas a simple red heading wouldn't necessarily mean anything to someone who's never been here before.
Of course, if you're intention is to trick 8-year-old latch-key kids into clicking on porn links, you're on the right track to Federal Pound-Me-In-The-Ass PrisonTM!

Another thing, are posts in an unmoderated state (before they get one of the checkboxes ticked?) Perhaps those could be a specific color too.
It'd be sweet if "unmoderated" was an option..
Last but not least if a post is NWS and you dont have NWS ticked, maybe you can just see the red titlebar but no post body. I have been confused by big gaps in post #'s. Plus, it sortof clues you in to your current option settings. And it would be nice to be able to override them on a whim.
Of course i'm probably asking the impossible, given Steve's hints at how yumbled the Yavascript is back there...
