UT Going Mainstream
by Steve Gibson, Sep 26, 1999 11:59pm PDTWith the posting yesterday talking about gameplay between Q3Test and the Unreal Tournament demo, CliffyB of Epic made a post (#119) to the Shack board with a pretty interesting comment on the interface and ease of use they are shooting for with UT in an attempt to get more "main stream". Here are a few parts of it:
...So, we make the user interface similar to one they already know (windows,) we make the default skill slightly lower than normal, and we include tutorials that explain how to play. We don't give them the crutch of playing keyboard-exclusive; we say "here's your mouse, here's your keyboard, here's how most people control these kinds of games." ... With UT we're trying to crack this genre open to more mainstream people while trying to avoid pissing off the hardcore guys. Having the AI stomp them makes them say "Well shit, this game is too hard. I guess I suck...I'll go back and play Minesweeper now." That's not a Good Thing when you're trying to expand a market. ... Oh, and we're making Godlike harder. Cliff <snip>

index the llama uses invert, but this doesn\'t mean anything, as he sux.
now to innovation, i like q3\'s classic guns much more than those unreal weapons, and i\'m glad q3 has no secondary fire.
look what i did..
stevie boy took cliffyb\'s comment to my article :) hehe
oh well.. :)
another few thousand his for steve..
heh
UT is ice skating STILL..
i cannot get used to the feeling..
feels soo quake1 ish.. (probably because it was catered to qworld players)
btw who said any one with inverted cant aim?
explain how i can top the frag list on many games of quake3 and quake2 and yes.. even haf laf... (i\'m also a half life hater)
hey cliffy why cant we play with more than 16bots? dont they play nice when you toss in 127 of them? heh
up the bot count to atleast 32! hee (chaos on that ctf map.. hehe and morphios.. hahahahahahahahahahahah)
Inverted mouse is good..
there had better be that option in final UT (i might acutally buy it i found a $20 on the side walk today)
oh well..
OH cliffyb.. how the fuck do you show how many frames per second your getting in UT? dont give me any bs saying we cant tell... (because our game is slow as crap)
:)
back to quake3... hehe
Godlike is a bit on the easy side :/
Gimme some proper practice! :D
Btw whoever mentioned that people with inverted mouse movement can\'t play. I use inverted and always have since duke3d. No problems for me.
i\'m waiting for that badass full demo to come out...Cliff around? give us a update??
we are all waiting and refreshing our fav gaming sites for news...thanx
out
UT/Unreal: \"FOV 90\" in the console (and the same for Q3A IIRC)
I\'m a bit tired though... 8)

So what\'s your setup then, if you don\'t crouch I mean...
-- Martin
if the q3 guys POV is higher off the ground and in general things are farther away (due to level scale) that could be what makes q3 seem slower...set your FOV to 110 and it will feel faster and not distort things too much, plus you can see more...
all of the levels in q3test are huge, even the tourney one...i think q3 will feel quite fast with smaller levels which i am sure will be in the final game (like the one they showed at EA)...and yeah, q3test2 with a bunch of people rocks...blood flying everywhere...mmm...
Now why do some of you guys use arrow keys for movement? I use RMB for forward, LMB for fire and CMB for different stuff depending on the game. Z=strafe left, X=strafe right, A=jump, LALT=backwards and LSHIFT=crouch/duck. Fits my left hand like a glove (pun intended, not delivered 8).
What\'s the key (another pun!!) benefits of using arrowkeys/ASDW for movement? And what do you use the mousebuttons for then?

I played a game of Q3Test last night with about 6 people on Q3Test2, and it was quite action packed, people getting railed in mid-air left and right, rockets flying, it made me realise that this \"UT is so much faster\" thing is just an illusion.
How is the performane and image quality on the Matrox G400 series video cards?
Thanks,
Sean
I guess that the \'cursor\' idea is quite valid though. Not that I\'ll ever change but now I understand where the un-inverted defualt comes from.
Heh, funny thing is, in Tribes you can select to invert the mouse on both horisontal and vertical axis. Now, if anyone tries to tell me that he runs around turning left when dragging his mouse to the right I\'d like to see that in action before I believe you. 8)

What do you think you are doing, flying a plane :)
I treat the crosshair as a cursor, when you want to aim at something, just think that it is an icon you want to click on.
Each to their own.

I doubt it really matters much. Whatever you\'re used to. This way just seems way more natural to me.
I know a couple of people that play without an inverted mouse and both of them are somewhat \"new\" to the game. Not saying everyone is a newbie that doesn\'t use an inverted mouse, that\'s just my experience with it.
I tried playing it un-inverted but just the thought of pulling the mouse back to look down made my brain hurt... 8) Do you play flight-sims (if you by any chance play such games) with the stick/mouse un-inverted as well?
-- Martin
man the linux nutz are gonna be weirded out about that one man...
and try teaching your girlfriends how to use a inverted mouse on ut and any other FPS for that matter, thats the harder part hehehe
