i bet their xbox sales numbers don't reflect that they sell every unit at a $100 loss. xbox would help gross sales, but would also eat up profits from other product sales.

I wonder if WinXP sales would still be "record" if they compared to Win95 sales, proportionally adjusted to the size of the computer market then, and the size of it now (As in, there are many many more eligible systems out there these days since a LOT of people bought PCs in the last 6 years).
