Unreal2 Shots Are Real
by Steve Gibson, Jan 16, 2002 3:30am PSTThe recent Unreal2 screenshots that came out a couple of days ago got quite a bit of criticism for looking photoshopped or "too good" if you can imagine that. Matt from Legend Entertainment made a quick post clarifying that the screenshots were staged, but they are 100% authentic within the engine shots.
And here we go with the "it's fake" posts again. This shots was done 100% in the engine. The models are real. The geometry is real. The lighting is real. The particle effects (that includes the rocket streak and explosion with the lenseflare) are real. If you want to find something fake it's that we posed the shot (it was for a CGW double page, after all) - the overall composition was sketched out before and models were placed in the editor. But then we went into the game (on a P3/1Ghz with GeForce2), let the bots fight and pressed the screenshots key. THAT WAS IT :) I know that some people won't believe it, and well, there's nothing we can do about it but tell them to wait for the game. And to be honest I've seen too many fake screenshots in my lifetime to not understand that people are suspicious. But this shot is real :) And no, we usually don't pose stuff, too much work, pretty much all other shots are simply taken by playing the game and hammering the screenshot key.

Not that the shot looks bad. I guess this way I can hope the game will look even better when I play it on my machine.
(which has a geforce 3 I won at a CPL event in it - yay)
OK,there was a whole , yet small, stage where you interacted and fought with AI driven enemies and I was usingthe weapons that were most complete: ( I realize it was an alpha) the pistol, RL, flamethrower, assaultrifle, and the sniper rifle. Now just like with unreal one ,I thought it was lame to pull out an assaultrifle and slowly walk/strafe while unloading at and enemy...the action sucked and the game is SHAPING up to be slow paced like U1.there were plenty of effects for the weapons that I listed. The RL was on its way to being extremely lame, slow with little rainbow sparks(you have seen them in at least one released pic) flying out on the explosions. The pistol, assault rifle, and sniperrifle all seemed generic, thought the sniper scoper was pretty cool .The flamethrower should kickass because it was looking sweet in the alpha, too bad evertything else about the game made me continue to not like the Unreal series.
I know this was a n ALPHA so shhh, but they use these and other builds to make screenshots to get you to say " omg, it looks so good!". when I took a screenshot of myself playing it and then looked at the screenshot ...I liked what I saw, lots of bad games look good in screenshots..I just wish those released screenshots could show FPS ;).

The Karma physics engine does support water physics and dynamics. Hopefully they'll have time to plunk that in to the engine.
http://www.mathengine.com/Files/ActorDemoV101.exe - here's a link to a demo released by Vivid Image showing off MathEngine's Karma physics in-action, including water physics. Note that the graphics engine (the lighting, geometry occlusion or lack of, etc.) is not the Unreal engine, and there are far more objects in this scene that can move than one is likely ever to see in a single area in any of the new Unreal engine games.
Unreal 2 - Single Player, maybe with multiplayer tacked on ala Unreal 1 (though should be better than Unreal 1 DM.)
Unreal Tournament 2 - Multiplayer with match-based single player game, ala Unreal Tournament. A bit more fleshed out than UT, and looks like it'll be team based oriented vs. lone gunman.
Unreal Championship - Basically UT with refined weapons, maps, gameplay. And by refined I mean 100 times more polys and a kick ass particle system. Nothing too deep, just an all out frag fest for the X-Box.
Unreal Warfare - The name used when refering to the latest version of the Unreal Engine ... but it's called Warfare for the same reason the Unreal Engine ended up being called the "Unreal" engine. I'll let you guys figure that one out.

But at this point in time, it's a question whether the era of Counter Strike has many players left who are interested in the futuristic war genre. I suppose it's possible that market is always there, and has just gone dormant because neither Q3 nor UT were compelling enough to keep more than a small minority of the market playing for more than a year (less than 10k combined online players at any given time versus the +60k online playing CS). Maybe better products -- plus the emphasis on teamplay -- will help. But gaming tastes have changed, and the fantasy/sf-based FPS shooter doesn't look exactly healthy right now. I wouldn't be surprised if Epic's sales are smaller than last time out.

When are they ever going to make realistic water in a game?!

HOWEVER, much of the prettyness is lost once things start moving at to low a framerate.
At 30fps you just won't notice all the nice details visible in a still shot of the same scene.
Actually, the more detail is in there, the more fps you need to notice it.
we'll all be tweaking down the details so that it runs at -at least- some 40fps.
unless we want to show off how pretty it -can be-.
I think this screen looks nice. Much better than the other screens with the clown and those giant flat outdoor settings.
The only thing that doesn't look particularly good is the water .. might be nice to see a little surface reflection on there.

Unreal2 is certainly at step above Unreal and UT, but its not shaping up to be anything amazing .I felt like I was playing an unreal expansion pack with the graphics turned all the way up, I saw very few NEW things.Nice flamethrower, lame RL.from what I've seen its shaping up to be a game that offers nothing new , but pretty stages that will run slow as hell on most machines .They should hurry it up and get as much money as they can before anything else comes out.
I'll just get a better single player game to play until Doom 3. SOF 2 >:)

I would have thought those games arent even in the same development cycle, everyone keeps saying how amazing doom3 is graphically, and it is, but I would have thought it would be going up against the next generation of unreal engine, not this one.

Because while the first screenfuls of images do look believable, I can't really believe that link there is in-game.

The shots posted here are faked in that they are NOT at the original resolution. Why is there no aliasing on any of the edges? Did they have AA enabled and then take the shots at 1600x1200 and then resample down?

It is as if some people think that they are too good to be true.
How can something that looks so good, be real?
They are almost Unreal.
I don't know whether I am going to like this new black and white vector graphics effect.
