Deus Ex 2 Interview
by Maarten Goldstein, Jan 15, 2002 3:42pm PSTION Storm's Warren Spector and Harvey Smith have been interviewed at Gamespot, answering questions about the upcoming Deus Ex 2. The Gamespot guys ask questions about such things like how long the game has been in development and when they expect it be completed, how many people are working on the game, the story to the game (they aren't sharing just yet), if following Deus Ex 1 means you can import the save games from that game, if characters from the first game will return, the new physics engine and its use in the game, the game's improved visual presentation, what the most exciting thing about Deus Ex 2 along with several other questions. A single new piece of concept art is included as well.
GS: Though Deus Ex does let you circumvent some of the combat, invariably, some sequences require deadly force. Will first-person shooter sequences still be emphasized in the sequel? WS: Let me jump in and answer this one. See, you're right that Deus Ex got pretty action-oriented in places...but when we started thinking about Deus Ex, we really wanted players to be able to get through the game sneaking, talking, shooting, or however else they wanted. Unfortunately, time and technology imposed some unfortunate limitations on us. As a result, Deus Ex ended up being far more combat-oriented than I hoped it would be. Stealth was an option, but it almost always made the game harder than the brute-force approach. I won't speak for the rest of the team, but I consider that one of our failures. Harvey and the Deus Ex 2 team are working hard to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again in Deus Ex 2. ...

"90 percent of players who buy a game do not finish "
The is nonsense, since many people have clearly stated that they have played Deus Ex several times.
It is clear that most people liked Deus Ex the way that it was.
They paid their money and they liked what they got.
What kind of nonsense logic is this where they seem to believe that it makes sense for you to pay your money first,
then you end up getting a shorter game, because that is what they thought that you wanted.
As if we have the right to claim our money back because we never got to finish a longer game.
The fact is, if the game is too short, then people will think that they have overpaid.
I can't recall anyone complaining because it was too long.
There seem to be far too many short games being produced these days.
It seems as if the developers are relying on more advanced graphics engines rather than map size and content
The producers are often trying to sell the game on hype.
Many of these producers are even expecting us to pre-order on the basis of that hype.
I think that I am going to have to wait for the reviews on Deus Ex 2 before I get it.
I was looking forward to Max Payne before it came out.
After playing the demo and reading the reviews, I decide to give it a miss.
I hope that I don't decide to give Deus Ex 2 as miss, because it is not as good as Deus Ex 1.

After that it was great. Good enough that I played out all three endings.

Of course they found nothing wrong with situations were being stealthy was "encouraged" by the game design.
It's just a shame that this team will never make a game that I'll like. I'd really like to enjoy all the other great things they do.

Ok, this scares me. I want to have a long, enjoyable experience the first time around. Playing through a game a second or third time is never as fun as the first. It's like diminishing returns. Some of the magic is lost. You know what's going to happen unless there's cheap random respawning ala MOH:AA. It just seems like a cop-out in a way.
Or maybe I'm bitter because the MGS2 guys said the same things about their game
